Alito Assured Ted Kennedy in 2005 of Respect for Roe v. Wade, Diary Says
Source: New York Times
Senator Edward M. Kennedy looked skeptically at the federal judge. It was Nov. 15, 2005, and Samuel A. Alito Jr., who was seeking Senate confirmation for his nomination to the Supreme Court, had just assured Mr. Kennedy in a meeting in his Senate office that he respected the legal precedent of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 court decision that legalized abortion.
I am a believer in precedents, Judge Alito said, in a recollection the senator recorded and had transcribed in his diary. People would find I adhere to that.
In the same conversation, the judge edged further in his assurances on Roe than he did in public. I recognize there is a right to privacy, he said, referring to the constitutional foundation of the decision. I think its settled.
But Mr. Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat and longtime supporter of abortion rights, remained dubious that November day that he could trust the conservative judge not to overturn the ruling. He brought up a memo that Judge Alito had written as a lawyer in the Reagan administration Justice Department in 1985, which boasted of his opposition to Roe.

Well, it looks like Alito effing lied like an SOB on that one . . . I wonder how these judges can expect the truth from others in their courts when they lie like the very devil themselves.

(1,884 posts)Is just a person. If theyre a right wing nut that doesnt give a fuck about anything except whatever the fuck they want to do, well thats just what theyre gonna do. Yes a judge has the power but theyre not necessarily any fucking good. Same as any other occupation.

(2,133 posts)When the rest of us were smoking weed and listening to Hendrix and the Grateful Dead Alito was sitting at home on New Year's eve and listening to Guy Lombardo. I wonder how surprised he will be when he reaches the "pearly Gates" and is sent to SATAN.

(5,838 posts)Alito is just a hateful woman hater who probably hates himself more than he hates anything or anyone else. This is the person who most likely excelled at everything and was not welcome anywhere. We have all seen these maladjusted egotistical self-haters who cover up with acting superior not have a clue as to why no one, not any one person, wants to be their friend.

(1,690 posts)OK, not really. The guy took a victory lap and then said "Suck it libs," so lying to get the opportunity to do that would be no problem in his mind. I guess we should feel lucky that Thomas Torquemada did have much to say on abortion or we'd be putting women who miscarry on the rack. I mean if we're going to quote colonial and pre-colonial jurists for precedent go with the ones your really like.

(3,588 posts)It doesn't matter a whit if he said it to Kennedy's face or said it under oath. He could have said ANYTHING short of "I will never, under any circumstances, ever, overturn Roe v. Wade", and it wouldn't be perjury. Even then, he could still probably get out from under a perjury charge by simply saying, "I looked at the arguments and I was forced to change my mind."
Bringing it back up at this point is pointless, unless it's to simply keep people riled up: He will never be charged with perjury, nor will he ever be impeached, much less convicted by the Senate.
Note: Before anyone attacks/flames me, I am NOT in any way defending this medieval cretin, I'm simply stating the facts.

It seems we are in for a very long fight on this issue, but now abortion is a more motivating wedge issue to OUR base, instead of theirs!
