Republican U.S. Rep. Liz Cheneyhas endorsed Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin and will campaign with her in Lansing next week as Slotkin faces a tough challenge from GOP state Sen. Tom Barrett in her bid for a third term.
It's the first time that Cheney, a prominent critic of former President Donald Trump, has formally endorsed a Democrat for office, according to Slotkin's campaign.
Cheney, who lost her GOP primary in Wyoming over the summer, serves on the House Armed Services Committee with Slotkin and both previously worked for the U.S. Department of State before going into politics. Slotkin also is a former CIA analyst and a top Pentagon official in the administration of President Barack Obama.
Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., left, and Rep. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich.
"I have come to know Elissa as a good and honorable public servant who works hard for the people she represents, wants what's best for the country, and is in this for the right reasons," Cheney said in a statement.
While Elissa and I have our policy disagreements, at a time when our nation is facing threats at home and abroad, we need serious, responsible, substantive members like Elissa in Congress. I encourage all voters in the 7th district Republicans, Democrats, and Independents to support her in this election................................

I have recently read some horrible tweets about liz cheney and her stance on abortion. But she is making the right move here.

(46,037 posts)Good for both of them. There are Republicans who are repulsed by Trump and his minions. It's time for other Republicans to tell them it's necessary to vote for the Democrat.

(26,619 posts)This is a good thing for her to do. Plenty of disgusted republicans out there who understand truth and still believe in America.

(29,233 posts)Looks like Slotkin is up by 6% with 8% still undecided; 45% of the undecideds are R, so Cheney could help lock in a win here.

(34,373 posts)opponent is a "no exceptions" zealot who mysteriously scrubbed his website clean of any mention of abortion -- or contraception -- after Roe v Wade was overturned. Fucking weasel. Apologies to actual, furry 4-legged weasels.
Another thing in our favor is we were redistricted (used to be MI-08, now we're MI-07) which made it fairer, and now we "lean Democratic."
Fingers crossed, GOTV, and donate if possible.

(4,435 posts)She has been my Rep, and she is he best damn Congress person I have ever had. She works her tail off for her district and for all Americans. Smarter than almost anyone, and keeps her constituents first in berthing.
She will have a close race this time. Her new district map is about 2-3% in favor of (R)s now, so she has a hard district to capture. Thankfully she is really loved by a lot of people.
She should win, even though the district is majority (R) by about a 52-48 Margain.

Hopefully this endorsement will add a bit to that.

(1,138 posts)realized that by giving their party over to authoritarians they were endangering democracy in the US. For a while in 2015 it looked like they were going to have a brokered convention to choose another candidate. But their party put itself before the country and chose Trump. Now more of the Republicans realize that they must get back control of their party or every election will be "democracy on the brink". I think that more Democratic voters and "independents" are realizing this too.

(8,810 posts)and yet, they have enabled him and pushed for him and their agenda for the past six years.........
The net, net, is that they have used him to launch full steam ahead towards the near completion of their goal.
If Repubs take the House and Senate, they will no longer need Trump for anything, and will take him down BIG TIME..
Also all of his Trump Humping Voters won't be needed anymore for anything..............They won't even need them for the 2024 election..........

(4,343 posts)Very interesting... I am confident that Slotkin will win re-election, but it may be closer than expected.
I voted for her in the primary in 2018, and ever afterwards.
