Powerball jackpot grows to record $1.9 billion as no tickets matched all winning numbers Saturday

Source: CNN

By Tina Burnside and Susannah Cullinane,

The Powerball jackpot has now grown to an estimated $1.9 billion after no winning tickets were sold in Saturday night’s drawing, according to the California Lottery Association.

The winning numbers were 28-45-53-56-69 and the Powerball was 20. The next Powerball drawing is set for Monday.

Saturday’s estimated $1.6 billion draw had been the “world’s largest lotto prize ever offered,” Powerball said.

But unfortunately for ticket buyers, the odds of winning the massive prize remain long – just 1 in 292.2 million.

A digital billboard advertises Powerball's jackpot in New York City.

expect the lotto to steal back about 1/3 and then come los federales looking for their 1/3. That is from your lump sum, not the jackpot.
Neither one of the above thieves gave you so much as a number either.
And when you lose, they are nowhere to be found. You cannot claim losses. They only claim your epic victories. When you win a dollar you are not worth their trouble. If they took 2/3 of that dollar after your lump sum of 33 cents, you can walk proudly away with 11 cents in change!

To get rich off the lotto: Own the lotto, don't play the lotto.

And yes, you can’t win if you don’t play, and what’s the harm of tossing them 5-10$ once in a while if you’re “feeling lucky”? But I think of those people who have their lucky numbers that they HAVE to play every time, because imagine how you’d feel if you didn’t play and your numbers finally come up? People who are spending hundreds of dollars that they can’t afford every month. People who, when asked what their retirement plan is will reply that they hope to win the lottery.

Now THAT’S stupid!

That was before they had games almost every night. I worked across the street from a grocery store so it was convenient.

I was in line one day & the lady a couple of people in front of me bought some scratch tickets, which I never bought. She scratched them off while others were being checked out & all of a sudden she started screaming, "I think I just won $50,000!" Sure enough, she had. They couldn't pay it there, but they verified it was a winning ticket & told her where she could go that afternoon to get a check. That was as close to a big winning ticket that I ever got.

What a ridiculous statement, you have the option of taking the full amount over 30 years or choose not to wait 30 years and take the cash payout. The cash payout is the amount that the lottery has to put up to make the full jackpot over 30 years with interest, you are making the choice to forgo the interest.

My brother, I would help. He needed $20k last year. I did not have it. I know not where he is or what condition his health is in. I do pray for him.

My only sister, she made her bed. In a cold hearted letter 4 1/2 years ago, she stated she was not interested in a relationship with me due to our brother. I last heard her voice 5 years ago.

My children and grandchildren would be cared for, our bills paid, our house renovated to sell, the rest of our lives, comfortable after donations to Charities near and dear to us were we to win. But I am not holding my breath.

You could do anything you wanted and more.

If I ever hit, I'd split it evenly with my kids. I'd endow the local humane society. The organization I volunteer for would benefit, all of my friends and relatives, and libraries, UNCF, ACLU, just to name a few.

If I did something for myself, I would try to buy back the property where I grew up and recreate my grandparents' house and grounds. Even if I can't go home again.

When the lottery started in Ohio the winner got $250,000. They have the odds set so high now nobody hits
for months. It would be better if 1900 people won $1 million rather than one winner with $1.9 billion.
I get a kick out of those that say you only would have $1 billion after taxes, $1 billion after taxes is not enough!
If I won that kind of money I keep maybe keep a million and give what few relatives I have a million each. Then create
a foundation with the other $995 million to help people in need. Greed has f---d up this country.

Another person who believes the payout should be split over more people.

Thank you!!!!! These sums that go to one or two winners are obscene. And no matter what naysayers are claiming, if MORE people knew they could win, then MORE would play. And that would result in higher jackpots.

If I was blessed with a couple million (net after taxes), I would easily make that last the rest of my life. At 68 years I just want to be safe, warm/cool, and dry. So sick of worrying about losing what little I have, and so fearful of crime, and Republicans beating the drums over SS and MCR.

the odds are so astronomical now I never buy. Most all my friends have said the same. Even our state lottery the prize is like $1 million I think but they have the odds set so it goes nearly a year between payouts. The odds on the Powerball 1 in over 290.000,000 and people take food off the table thinking they will win. To quote former Congressman Jim Trafacant "Beam me up".

Sometimes I think that they do this by design. All they would have to do is have a program to analyze all combinations that have been purchased, then have it spit out combinations that have not been issued. So, the jackpot grows and grows along with the interest in the game and money spent by players.

It probably isn't done but, it surely wouldn't surprise me if it was. I would rather see a game that only costs $1 per play and pays out something like $10M to several players instead of one occasional mega-jackpot to just one. That being said, I'll go buy some tomorrow... again... as usual.
