Four Supreme Court justices who voted to strike down Roe v. Wade joined the Federalist Society Thursday night as the conservative legal group celebrated its 40th anniversary and resoundingly applauded the high courts June decision.
Justice Samuel Alito, who penned the courts majority decision that overturned Roe, did not directly address the ruling during his remarks at the black-tie dinner in Washington, DC. But he received a standing ovation from the audience when former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Stephen Markman invoked the decision.
You know, Ive heard it said by some in recent months that the Dobbs decision will be forever an indelible part of Justice Alitos legacy, Markman said.
Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh were also in attendance, as was Justice Amy Coney Barrett, who also delivered remarks during the dinner, which the group hosted in celebration of its longevity and in honor of the late conservative Justice Antonin Scalia. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was also in attendance.

(13,480 posts)Republicans have dozens of organizations whose sole purpose is to protect the oligarchy and prevent true democracy. The Koch Foundation sponsors dozens of them, including some that work to undermine higher education with right-wing theories and their libertarian ideas of little government and few taxes. ALEC also comes to mind for its role in writing Republican legislation that always benefits corporations and hurts average people.
The billions of dollars these organizations spend every year, along with corporate lobbyists, would be enough to create the best healthcare and education systems in the world. If we cant get rid of them, we need to figure out a way to tax them.

(15,463 posts)nor with the idea that Alito is a current rock star with the FS.
A more interesting take might be to dig down with FS members and see if there is any degree of anxiety over the continued 'legitimacy' question dogging the court (and the judiciary by extension in general).

If you want to see faith in action look to Jimmy Carter, Nancy Pelosi, or Joe Biden.
Not these "conservative" freaks.

(1,370 posts)But thanks (in great part) to these four assholes, any chance of a "red wave" disappeared and now we will probably control the Senate and the losses in the house will be much lower than expected. So that's their legacy and it's permanent. The "legacy" they are so proud of is temporary because it will be overturned eventually.

(179,870 posts)Roberts has lost control of the SCOTUS and the Partisan Hacks are calling the shots.
If these partisan hacks do not want to be called partisan hacks, they should consider not going to RWNJ galas and socializing with other partisan hacks/RWNJs
These assholes went to a dinner celebrating the abolishment of a constitutional right. This is something only a partisan hack would do

Associated Press correspondent Mark Sherman reported Justices Samuel Alito, Amy Coney Barrett, Neil Gorsuch, and Brett Kavanaugh were in attendance at the group's 40th-anniversary celebration
Sherman noted it is four-fifths of the majority of the court that overturned Roe. Controversial Justice Clarence Thomas was the fifth.
Three of the four justices in attendance were nominated by Donald Trump......
Former U.S. Attorney Joyce Vance wondered if the justices at the dinner had forgotten their job.
"As with so many of our institutions, the judiciary can only do its work when the public has confidence in it," Vance noted. "Some of our judges seem to have forgotten that and that they have life tenure to serve the American people, not the political agenda of the people who put them in place."
