Trump sues Jan. 6 committee to block subpoena for documents, testimony
Source: ABC News
Former President Trump has sued to block the Jan. 6. committee subpoena for documents and testimony.
The committee last Friday extended the deadline for Trump to comply with their documents request by one week. The initial deadline was Nov. 4. The committee also asked Trump to appear for a deposition on Monday, Nov. 14.
As ABC News previously reported, this move was expected by Trump's team to attempt to run out the clock on the subpoena before Republicans potentially retake the House following the 2022 midterm elections.
Trump's lawyers argue in their lawsuit that he retains immunity as a former president and that while other presidents and former presidents have voluntarily agreed to testify before Congress, his legal team claims that no president has been compelled to do so.

(296 posts)the filing claims..."The separation of powers concerns raised by congressional aggrandizement at the expense of the Executive Branch do not expire when a President leaves office," and it also seems to be claiming executive immunity for life as well as President for life in that they also argued "the Committee, however, insists that the Executive, in the person of President Trump, must yield to the demands of the Legislative Branch and comply with its Subpoena.". We'll have to see how the courts view these claims.

(42,660 posts)He has no legal claim over ANY documents belonging to the government. All Presidential docs and records are property of the government.

(6,017 posts)It will take time to work through this latest delay tactic. Then his lawyers will toss another one on the fire, and that one will take time. Eventually, given his level of privilege, an opportunity will arise for him to put off justice indefinitely.
This has always been his MO. Creating chaos in orderly systems & taking advantage of any opportunities that arise is his one life skill.

(10,629 posts)EVERY time, in EVERY story, instead of this nebulous phrase, "T****'s lawyers said" BS.
They should all be named and shamed. That issue of immunity has been struck down time after time, and "T****'s lawyers" STILL claim it!

(17,368 posts)on the Congressional Special Committee. It's unlikely we will ever see him testify unless Democrats retain the House which, while possible, is looking improbable. Sometimes our system is infuriating -- especially when it comes to this bankrolled, bloviating asshole. ... You know, it wouldn't be quite so infuriating if the system worked for everyone instead of being an in escapable whirlpool that essentially destroys the lives of people with limited or no means who made one relatively minor mistake or judgement.
