Nancy Pelosi to step down as House Democratic leader after two decades

Source: CNBC

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced Thursday she will not seek reelection to her congressional leadership role, ending a two-decade streak as the top House Democrat.

Pelosi, speaking on the House floor, said she will remain a member of Congress and serve out the term to which she was just elected.

The announcement came less than a day after news outlets projected that Democrats would narrowly lose their House majority to Republicans following the midterm elections.

Pelosi, 82, has kept her future plans under wraps in the aftermath of the midterms, when Democrats exceeded expectations up and down the ballot. Republicans, who anticipated that a “red wave” would deliver them sweeping majorities in Congress, will instead take a thin lead in the House, per NBC News estimates.

AND...Pelosi will not longer be the Democrats' leader, she is remaining in Congress and will serve as a mentor to the party's new leadership. So she will be there for the next person......yeah!!!

But I do think Katie Porter would be an excellent choice.. She is just as steely as Nancy when it comes to her own position in congress and I can see Pelosi mentoring her and glad to do so!

and I'm so glad she will serve out her term! She will also be able to provide stellar strategic advice to the new leadership without being such a target of all the RWNJ hatred (especially misogyny) and vitriol. (And all those memes about her being a drunk, when she doesn't even drink, although I guess that's the least of it...)

But I understand her reasons - she’s abiding by her agreement to step down after 2022 and she said the attack on her husband was a factor.

I’m just thankful she is still going to serve her term. The new D leader in the House will need Pelosi’s advice and guidance.

She's been amazing, and wonderful, and smart, and badass all at the same time.

Thank you Nancy! Thanks for your leadership, guidance, perseverance, patience, and determination. You have been masterful in your 20+ years of leading Democrats and the House. I'm including the off-years as well as the on-years, you have shown all of us how the job of Speaker needs to be done.
