Rep. Hakeem Jeffries announces bid to replace Nancy Pelosi as Democratic leader

WASHINGTON New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the fourth-ranking House Democrat, said Friday that he will run to replace House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as the party's leader after Republicans took back control of the chamber in last weeks midterm elections.
His announcement in a letter to colleagues came a day after Pelosi said in a powerful floor speech that she is stepping down after a two-decade reign as the top leader of House Democrats.
If Jeffries is successful, it would represent a historic passing of the torch: Pelosi made history as the first female speaker of the House, while Jeffries, the current Democratic Caucus chairman, would become the first Black leader of a congressional caucus and highest-ranking Black lawmaker on Capitol Hill. If Democrats were to retake control of the House a real possibility with Republicans having such a narrow majority Jeffries would be in line to be the first Black speaker in the nation's history.
The ascension of the 52-year-old Jeffries to minority leader would also represent generational change. Pelosi and her top two deputies Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., and Majority Whip Jim Clyburn, D-S.C. are all in their 80s and are receiving from within the party for new blood in leadership; Hoyer will not seek another leadership post while Clyburn plans to stay on and work with the next generation.

House Republicans should be quaking in their boots. For Hakeem Jefferies has a street fighter instinct, is very blunt, and knows how to lead. He showed that during the impeachment trials.
Kevin, Marjie, Boobert, Steve, are no match for Hakeem. Should the Dems retake the House, rest assured he will be Speaker. Republicans had best stay out of his way as well as watch what they say about him.

(20,906 posts)The Democratic side of the House represents MORE of the face of America. Men, women, African-Americans, POC, the very young, various religious faiths, other parts of the world, ages, etc.
What do the Republicans have? No diversity whatsoever.

(169,804 posts)But whenever the GOP "wins" something, whether it is barely or by a blowout, it is always called "a mandate" for them. But if we "win", no matter by what range, there is always some doubt raised and pissing on the milestone by assuming the "default" government is "Republican", and our "win" is only temporary.
The media is doing just that here in PA after it was confirmed last evening that the PA Democrats took control of the PA state House for the first time in a dozen years - most of them using the talking point about it "being messy". Yet somehow the GOP in the U.S. House with their "slim margin", doesn't have a problem.
So I was glad to see this change of potential.

(169,804 posts)the "highest" leadership for the House is "Minority Leader", which is what she would have probably been re-elected to be in the new Congress if she had chosen to remain in a leadership position, but would be what he would become if the votes go his way.
Neither she nor Steny Hoyer opted to be in the leadership chain of command, so yes "replace".

(114,616 posts)Nancy Pelosi has been the most effective Speaker in my lifetime and I will miss her.
The video of her on Jan 6 when she wanted TFG to show up so she could punch him out and go happily to jail made me like her as a person. I wanted to punch him out, too.
I wish all the best to Jeffries. He's got some big shoes to fill.

We cannot afford to be viewed as a leftist party.
Yes, we can keep pointing to how so many beneficial programs can be viewed as "socialist" but the socialist description is a political killer. We saw it two years ago.

A 52-year-old descendant of enslaved people, Jeffries could be a potential history-maker himself if Democrats retake the House in future cycles: He would be the first Black speaker.
Jeffries has a reputation as a capable operator inside the conference with sharp media skills to sell a Democratic message to the public (and a penchant for referencing Biggie Smalls in floor speeches).
However, he could face some opposition from the most vocal progressives in the House, who labeled him a centrist.
"I'm a Black progressive Democrat concerned with addressing racial and social and economic injustice with the fierce urgency of now. That's been my career, that's been my journey and it will continue to be as I move forward for however long I have an opportunity to serve. There will never be a moment where I bend the knee to hard-left democratic socialism," he told The Atlantic last year.

(15,426 posts)Jeffries has done everything he needed to do to advance in the House Democratic leadership.
You must remember, as progressive as you or I may be, each Representative in the US House not only represents the people in their district, but the businesses as well.
Consider this - Biden is proposing a new windfall profit tax in an attempt to rein in corporate price gouging. Too little too late? Maybe, but it is certainly better than doing nothing.
We have seen many good things come from the Democrats in Congress and the Biden administration. Again, progress is being made. Maybe not as fast as with a Warren, or a Sanders, or an AOC, but progress is being made.
Jeffries will do fine.

He's already been in a "leadership" position as head of the Democratic Caucus so it would a natural step up for him to consider running or it.
