Iran will help Russia build drones for Ukraine war, Western officials say

Source: Washington Post

After weeks of savaging Ukrainian cities with Iranian-made drones, Moscow has quietly reached an agreement with Tehran to begin manufacturing hundreds of unmanned weaponized aircraft on Russian soil, according to new intelligence seen by U.S. and other Western security agencies.

Russian and Iranian officials finalized the deal during a meeting in Iran in early November, and the two countries are moving rapidly to transfer designs and key components that could allow production to begin within months, three officials familiar with the matter said in interviews.

The agreement, if fully realized, would represent a further deepening of a Russian-Iranian alliance that already has provided crucial support for Moscow’s faltering military campaign in Ukraine, the officials said. By acquiring its own assembly line, Russia could dramatically increase its stockpile of relatively inexpensive but highly destructive weapons systems that, in recent weeks, have changed the character of the nine-month-old Ukrainian conflict.

Russia has deployed more than 400 Iranian-made attack drones against Ukraine since August, intelligence officials say, with many of the aircraft used in strikes against civilian infrastructure targets such as power plants. After being forced to abandon Ukrainian territory its forces captured early in the war, Moscow has shifted to a strategy of relentless air assaults on Ukrainian cities, using a combination of cruise missiles and self-detonating drones packed with explosives to knock out electricity and running water for millions of people.

1. May the people behind the engineering and manufacturing of those drones meet thier deaths ASAP

I don't see how the Ukrainians can continue to let Russia and now with help from Iran launch drones, missiles, and attack aircraft against the citizens of Ukraine from Russian soil.

"After being forced to abandon Ukrainian territory its forces captured early in the war, Moscow has shifted to a strategy of relentless air assaults on Ukrainian cities, using a combination of cruise missiles and self-detonating drones packed with explosives to knock out electricity and running water for millions of people."

It is also time for the Russian people to take care of their "Putin Problem." 25% of all Russians do not have up to date
indoor plumbing and yet Putin has God only knows how many homes some of which cost > $1 billion.

7. We can call it the "New Blitz".

Hitler did it to Britain, mostly London; Putlin's doing it to Ukraine.

Can't get the toys that are rightfully yours, can't get the gratitude and appreciation for you and your cause, best to destroy it all. Rather like an abusive husband or father.

2. Interesting. What exactly do these provide that Russian drones can't?

I would think maybe they are just cheaper, but I've seen breakdowns of some of the Russian drones and a lot of them are not brimming with high-priced hi-tech gizmos and gadgets. Russia using Iran's industrial base to have drones built for it makes clear sense, but needing to import an Iranian design of relatively simple drone so that it can be built using Russia's industry makes less sense for my simple mind.

25. Which I would totally understand if they were making them in Iran

This article makes it sound as if they are transferring designs so that Russia can build them in Russia. Unless the Iranian drones are so simple they only require the most basic of electronic components. Although, in that case I'd wonder why Russia wouldn't be able to do that without a technology transfer. But from what I've heard, these Iranian drones are using US and European parts. That seems to rule our that Iran has some indigenous advanced electronics or other manufacturing knowledge that Russia doesn't have.

Another thought, maybe Iran is just a middle man in some high-end tech transfer coming from China to Russia. China having advanced capabilities that Russia might not have is something that makes a lot more sense. Who knows, aye?

12. Let the Ukrainians "pilot them" but we have long range drones that can fly anyplace in Russia or

... the world and they could take out those facilities because the Ukrainian military can not let Russia keep
launching these attacks by drones, aircraft, and missiles from Russian lands, Belarus, Crimea, and their
ships in the black sea. Vlad is trying to starve and freeze out the brave people of Ukraine along with
stopping them from getting water too.

BTW Russia and Vlad's war on the people of Ukraine was brought to us by Trump and the GOP.

see change in RNC platform 2016 & impeachment #1 for TFG.

14. Sweden has already promised "to sell" some world class attack jet fighters to Ukraine it is ...

.... now passed the point of letting Putin bring in death and suffering from the air so bring on those
Swedish jets and paint Ukrainian colors on them. And those drone, missile, and air bases

BTW I think Vlad is having Iran make the drones is because Russia has a hard time getting the needed parts.

11. You do realize

that this is our own damn fault, right? When you make a pariah of a country, is is going to ally with another pariah.

What Iran did (the hostage crisis) happened 42 years ago). Think about this---the government of Iran is probably no worse than the government of Saudi Arabia, and those guys are our "allies". Some allies, right? Only because they have more oil and more money.

Your everyday Persian in the streets is probably more like us than your everyday Saudi is. Before the overthrow of the Shah, and even before that, they were one of the most westernized countries in the Middle East. Further, the current government, and the overthrow of the Shah, can be directly tied to the CIA, which was responsible for the overthrow of the democratically elected leader, Mohammed Mossadegh, in 1953, because he was, OMFG, a "leftist, a socialist, maybe even a *gasp* Communist!" said John Foster Dulles, and the establishment of the cruel regime of Shah Reza Pahlevi. So yeah, in many ways the current government is directly our fault.

23. The war could be over before the Russians get production set up,

and is Iran going to be supplying Russia with the components needed? Things like that are very hard to get in Russia nowadays.

Oh well, I just hope they get some large flashing "No Smoking" signs put up at their factories. No telling what might happen.

24. Would this have happened under the deal?

I've been wondering if Iran's support of Russia would've taken place if the Iran nuclear deal wasn't broken by Trump. Cancelling the deal caused rising tensions with the west and pummeling sanctions on Iran's people. Perhaps Iran had no choice but to side with Russia.

I think Obama had done the right thing in trying to fix relations with Iran and Trump messed it up.
