HONOLULU (AP) Hawaiis Mauna Loa, the worlds largest active volcano, began spewing ash and debris from its summit, prompting civil defense officials to warn residents on Monday to prepare in case the eruption causes lava to flow toward communities.
The eruption began late Sunday night in the summit caldera of the volcano on the Big Island following a series of closely spaced, fairly large earthquakes, Ken Hon, the scientist-in-charge at the Hawaiian Volcanos Observatory, said at an early morning news conference.
Magma moved to the surface, although lava flows were contained within the summit area and werent threatening nearby communities. A time-lapse video of the eruption from overnight shows molten lava lighting up the caldera, moving across it like waves on the ocean.
There have been some photos provided to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory that suggest that the south end of the caldera has overflowed, causing some lava flows a few kilometers (miles) out of the caldera, Hon said. In some previous eruptions, lava has overflowed the caldera but never made it close to populated areas.

Previous update -
Early Monday, it said lava flows were contained within the summit area and weren't threatening nearby communities. "However, lava flows in the summit region are visible from Kona. There is currently no indication of any migration of the eruption into a rift zone," the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said in a statement.
A rift zone is where the mountain is splitting apart, the rock is cracked and relatively weak and it's easier for magma to emerge. How long the volcano erupts and whether it could cause lava to flow to populated areas of the island is impossible to predict, said Miel Corbett, a USGS spokesperson.
"But I can tell you, we're in constant communication right now with Hawaii Civil Defense, and they're providing updates to community members," she said. The USGS warned residents at risk from Mauna Loa lava flows should review their eruption preparations. Scientists had been on alert because of a recent spike in earthquakes at the summit of the volcano, which last erupted in 1984.

The eruption began late Sunday night in the summit caldera of the volcano on the Big Island, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Early Monday, it said lava flows were contained within the summit area and weren't threatening nearby communities.
The agency warned residents at risk from Mauna Loa lava flows should review their eruption preparations. Scientists had been on alert because of a recent spike in earthquakes at the summit of the volcano, which last erupted in 1984.
Mauna Loa, rising 13,679 feet (4,169 meters) above sea level, is the much larger neighbor to Kilauea volcano, which erupted in a residential neighborhood and destroyed 700 homes in 2018. Some of its slopes are much steeper than Kilauea's so when it erupts, its lava can flow much faster.

(38,439 posts)(Yes ...every kind!)...you never thought about this one before...did you?
You name it, we got it... for example: lowlands, highlands, deserts, farmlands, ice lands, cities, farms, caves. ocean fronts, mountains, valleys, rivers, streams, lakes, islands, big cities, small cities, this and that....!!!
Wait a minute.....Do we have a state that is basically islands? How did we get that one?
Do we got people from everywhere too....Oh no!!!!! not that one too? ...I live in a "mixed community"
Skokie Illinois, & when I go to the local food store, ..(Jewel in my neighborhood,) I hear every kind of language that
people are talking among themselves. Many, I cannot identify..& couldn't guess in many years....

(3,334 posts)In Portland Or. 82nd av points straight at it. I was driving north on 82nd and the quake associated with the explosion rocked the van I was in. I thought I was rear ended but looking straight ahead explained everything. It was truly surreal. Everyone who noticed stopped, got out of their cars and oogled, Then the "oh shits" started.
My dads Auto body shop was in Hillsboro Or. and for days we had to make sure parking lot and street drains were clear.
The ash was like sandpaper grit and no fun to remove. Had to prefilter intakes of cars so they could breathe free-er.
Smoked my share of anxiety lowering meds. One of the most memorable experiences of my life. With or whithout the Meds. haha
Truly feel for the folks going through this. Wish I had access to some of their "meds' though.

(279 posts)We've seen a lot of photos from family and friends this morning, from all over the island. Fire and ice, since Mauna Kea was covered in snow. Hope we don't have to evacuate.
