Democratic Sen. Warnock wins Georgia runoff against Walker
Source: Associated Press
ATLANTA (AP) Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock defeated Republican challenger Herschel Walker in a Georgia runoff election Tuesday, ensuring Democrats an outright majority in the Senate for the rest of President Joe Bidens term and helping cap an underwhelming midterm cycle for the GOP in the last major vote of the year.
With Warnocks second runoff victory in as many years, Democrats will have a 51-49 Senate majority, gaining a seat from the current 50-50 split with John Fettermans victory in Pennsylvania. There will be divided government, however, with Republicans having narrowly flipped House control.

(23,283 posts)I suspect Senate Republicans are privately happy about this result as well.
The last thing they need, is Walker-on-all-fours punching Louisiana's Kennedy in the face after he refers to him as "boy."
They'd have to dig inside the walls to find Kennedy's remains.

(16,427 posts)that he may retire at the end of his term. Unfortnately, if that happens there is no potential Democratic contender who could win a Senate race there right now, barring a miracle. (I say this as someone who grew up in WV with multigenerational roots there).

(2,598 posts)To the extent that you can look at candidate quality independently of ideology, the contrast could hardly be more massive
it is very telling that Republicans, both in Nov & today were willing to mobilize fully behind someone like Walker
in AL, pederast Moore still raked in 47 some odd % of the vote
Democrats go overboard the other way, ditching people like Al Franken for reasons that strike me as far less than compelling -- and no similar defender of net neutrality in Congress has replaced him
At any rate, I'm glad I contributed to Warnock (in the general, after the news of the first armtwisted abortion came out & percolated thru the media cycles and Walker's candidacy didn't collapse, I felt it was imperative), & then to a group to mobilize young voters to the polls in Dec
But races like this SHOULD NOT be so close -- obviously the anti-choice movt & its leadership, for example, have little fear of backlash for this sort of thing from their base -- which shows it's ALL about power & not about high principle of innocent fetuses

(3,530 posts)Warnock carried all of the larger cities, but the rural urban divide is stark. The very idea that a man like Herschel Walker could get even 30% of the vote scares the shit out of me. When I look at some of the people serving in the Senate like Rand Paul, Tommy Tuberville and Ted Cruz I shudder. Of course, in sports addled America being a former football star might be worth 10 or fifteen points.

SomewhereInTheMiddle
(656 posts)It was too close. But it may not be as bad as it looks.
According to the Federal Register Georgia has a voting age population of just over 8 million. The numbers I am seeing from both the main election and the run-off are around 4 million votes cast in each. I think a lot of people did not vote for Walker. They vote for the (R) after his name. I think it likely there were a number of republicans who could not stomach voting for their candidate, even with his party affiliation, and just did not vote. Walker ended up with only around 25% of the eligible votes.
The question I am most concerned about is why Warnock also only got around 25%. Why is voter turnout so low. Mid-term I know, and they traditionally have fewer votes. But
Sigh
Still, a win is a win. And we avoid having Walker on the national stage for the next six years (one hopes).
