RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Duke Energy said Wednesday it has completed repairs on substation equipment damaged in shootings over the weekend that cut power to thousands of central North Carolina homes and it expects power to be fully restored by midnight.
In a statement on its website, the energy company said all of the equipment damaged in an attack on two North Carolina substations Saturday has been fixed or replaced. The company said Moore County customers will gradually get power back throughout the day as it finishes testing and completes restoration safely.
To avoid overwhelming the electrical system we will bring power back on gradually, with the goal of having the majority of customers restored before midnight tonight, the statement said.
As of late Wednesday morning, about 14,000 customers were without power in the county, according to poweroutage.us. Thats down from a peak of more than 45,000 customers without power over the weekend.

(2,170 posts)Anyone hear if the terrorists were caught?

(1,818 posts)It appears he prayed it out with a person familiar to the event.

(38,187 posts)They've known each other for a while, it seems. I bet they never catch whoever did it....they probably are not really looking because they know and don't want to arrest a buddy.

(12,363 posts)so there's a pretty good chance the terrorists will be caught, people do talk.

(2,146 posts)It means get the truth out of her (confessing in prayer). In some other parts of the country it would be said as "have a little discussion".

(38,187 posts)In this area, they use that when they did something bad to someone and use religion as their cover. They rarely use that any other way here. It means they got away with something.

I'm not going to update further. They are down to 5,234 services out. About every 20 minutes or so the total goes down.
Jamastiene
(38,187 posts)It would be too much at once. So, they will probably time it and turn parts back on from time to time to get it all back up and running.

(17,432 posts)it is mentioned in my NC group post
All substation equipment damaged from recent vandalism has either been fully repaired or replaced. Once we have completed all necessary testing, the gradual restoration of service to those Moore County communities still without power will begin. To avoid overwhelming the electrical system we will bring power back on gradually, with the goal of having the majority of customers restored before midnight tonight.

(16,936 posts)added to the substations. Rachel Maddow talked about a similar incident that happened in Ca. on April 16, 2013, for which no arrrests have been made.
If domestic terrorists are going to target the power grid, communication systems and other infrastructure, we need to defend it better. And if anyone one is caught, they and they families responsible for the cost of repair or replacement, plus prison. Also, track ammo sales. Or maybe camo sales.

(9,006 posts)Taking out parts of the power grid were in the plans of these German blockheads. Bunch of arrests. I would bet our FBI is watching some of these groups. And some are going to jail already.

(45,430 posts)it's standard for war. Cybercriminals hit an American oil pipeline last year.
America's infrastructure is more vulnerable to terrorism than most Americans are willing to admit.
Marthe48
(16,936 posts)and read articles at the time about how vulnerable our infrastructure is, how vulnerable our online security is. I don't think anything has changed since then. Creating actually physical protection, that would emply people to install, would be a plus in many ways.
Of course, anyone hired to install would have to be rigidly background checked. So many layers, so many disturbed people

(22,632 posts)But I think it's going to take some out of the box thinking to create a comprehensive solution. I thought of cameras, too. But in reality I don't think that would work.
It's going to be interesting to see what they do to preemptively protect against these kinds of attacks in the future. I hope no one died! People on oxygen were the first people that crossed my mind.

I bet there are ways to make an invisible fence that would trigger a remote alarm, either by detecting weight, or motion, or even whatever kind of metal is in guns or ammo.

(17,531 posts)The security at the tens of thousands of substations is putting a fence around them to keep people from coming in and electrocuting themselves. Many of them are remote, and successful firearm attacks can be mounted from hundreds of yards away. What a man can do in thirty seconds can take thousands of man-hours to fix. I suspect that the only way that the outlaws, who shot up the station in question, will be caught is if they brag about it.
A good way to prevent such actions is to go after all of the armed right-wing militias and put their sorry asses in prison. We make war on street gangs, lets make war on armed militias and all of those who support them.

(16,936 posts)Black Panthers, Native Americans such as Leonard Peltier, and other groups and individuals that were a threat or perceived as a threat, with no qualms.
I would like to have them go after the armed rw domestic terrorists and weed them out the same as they did with the Mafia in the 60s, and people of color in the 70s.
Jamastiene
(38,187 posts)they call all other gangs, gangs, but they call white gangs, "militias." They are still gangs, if you really think about it. They actually seem way more dangerous but they still work like gangs.

(22,632 posts)I did here there's a reward out now for information but I don't remember for how much...
People are so evil sometimes. But I'll never really be able to wrap my mind around that. I'm just a Pollyanna I guess.

(38,187 posts)It was rotten at ground level and barely could have held up in a stiff wind much longer. Duke Energy has an attitude about low population areas. I doubt they would spend on maintaining or updating or even repairing their equipment if the world wasn't watching.
I've dealt with them. They literally told me even though my aunt was on their list of people who need power back faster for medical reasons, that we were low population, therefore low priority. That was during Hurricane Florence. It took them so long to get the power back on at my house, after Hurricane Florence that my aunt's health went haywire. She had been stable as long as I had the equipment to take care of her, but with no power, even with a power inverter, it was not enough. I had to send her to the hospital to try to get her taken care of. It wasn't long after that, she died. I still say she would have lived much longer without that stress.
Marthe48
(16,936 posts)it sounds like you took the best care of your aunt that you could. We live in America, and nightmares like this aren't supposed to happen.
I'm for more federal regulations and enforcement, not less, of all the companies. They have gotten away with shoddy practice for too long.
Jamastiene
(38,187 posts)They just said vandalism. They didn't say if guns were used, but it was an attack on a substation there too. This seems like test runs or something.
