Walker's loss in Ga. spurs new GOP hand-wringing, calls for new strategy

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Omaha Steve (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Herschel Walker’s loss in a pivotal Georgia Senate race Tuesday has renewed Republican calls to break with former president Donald Trump and rethink the party’s strategy ahead of 2024, as lawmakers and operatives reckoned with the final blow in a profoundly disappointing midterm cycle.

The recriminations were swift as Republicans began the autopsy of Walker’s race on Wednesday, sparring over who and what cost them the seat. Many blamed Trump for urging Walker, a former football star with no political experience and a slew of allegations about his personal life, to run for the Senate against Democratic Sen. Raphael G. Warnock, betting on his celebrity in a high-stakes midterm election in which Republicans needed to net just one seat to take the majority.

Republican operatives raised concerns about spending deficits, on-the-ground strategy and the party’s ability to appeal beyond its base. But the hand-wringing repeatedly came back to their candidate, one of many inexperienced and polarizing nominees who lost battleground races this year.

Brian Robinson, a GOP operative in Georgia, said that despite all the hurdles, Walker “almost pulled this off,” noting that he still captured more than 48 percent of the vote. But to earn those extra few percentage points to win in Georgia, Republicans need candidates who can persuade whom he called “comparison shoppers,” not “tribal voters.” Other Republicans who won across the state on Nov. 8 ran as “steadyhanded, levelheaded, competent, no-fireworks leaders,” he said.

and that is collectively ,publicly renounce Trump.

Won’t happen but until they do they will continue to lose races they should easily win, like GA and AZ.

Oh, well. Sucks to be them.

sorry Rudy but that's the real problem. Herschel made a strong case for werewolves. You gotta have faith in this country. Faith in werewolves.

recruiting celebrities who already have name recognition.

Sometimes it works out well for them like Steve Largent or Jack Kemp.

But they sometimes ignore that a candidate needs something beyond name recognition...like a brain inside their head.

Reagan spent years writing political op-eds before running for office. Kemp was so much of a policy wonk that he had trouble giving a speech without talking over the audience's heads.

Walker, in contrast, apparently spent years getting random women pregnant then pressuring them into getting abortions. Or wondering about vampires vs werewolves...then coming down on the wrong side about which is better to be....

Mr. Robinson claims the other Republicans on the Georgia ballot were "steadyhanded, levelheaded, competent, no-fireworks leaders."

Either my definition of levelheaded and competent is far different from Brian Robinson's or they're disavowing Karen Taylor Greene, the menace of the House.

Okay, this is what's going to happen. After exceptionally careful deliberation the Georgia Republican Party is going to decide the big problem was they weren't far enough to the right in 2022. It will become exceedingly obvious, to them anyway, that The Only Way To Win Elections Anymore is to go completely fascist because "fascist-lite" didn't win elections in 2022. We know this because they've done it too many times to count.

and it's still a pig. The modern GOP has no platform and no decency. Best the party wither and die.

Not that I would not be happy to see the GOP circle the drain for several more election cycles, giving us time to shore up our shaky democracy. But if the "party of Lincoln" were to perish from the face of the earth, what would the 30-40% of the voters who are currently supporting them do?

I don't see many jumping to our side. Politics are too tribal for that. We are the bad guys in their minds. All I can see is the rise of one or more "conservative" parties in the place of the GOP.

Also, without the external threat of the Repubs, I think the Democratic Party would be in danger of implosion, or at least of schism along ideological lines.

Perhaps that would be a good thing too? As a nation, we might evolve from a two-party system to a more parliamentary system that allows for a broader range of ideological representation in the legislatures.

Ultimately, I think the two parties are too enmeshed in our current system and in the hearts and minds of the voters. They are both too big to fail.

Or that is my thought.
