Korean firms plan $4 billion-plus battery plant in Georgia

ATLANTA (AP) Hyundai Motor Group and a South Korean battery maker say they will jointly invest $4 billion to $5 billion in Georgia to build a new plant northwest of Atlanta that would supply electric batteries for Hyundai and Kia electric vehicles assembled in the United States.
Hyundai and SK On, a unit of Koreas SK Group, made the announcement Thursday. The plant, to be located just west of Cartersville, would begin production in 2025 and employ a projected 3,500 people.
Its another in a series of electric battery plants being built as part of automakers transition to electric vehicles. The investment is also being driven by the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act, which offers $7,500 tax credits for electric vehicles, but only if vehicles and batteries are assembled in North America and a certain share of critical minerals inside the battery are mined or processed in North America.
Hyundai broke ground in October on a $5.5 billion electric vehicle plant near Savannah in coastal Georgia, with plans to produce 300,000 vehicles a year and hire 8,100 workers.

(12,598 posts)is that the main supplier of raw lithium to the United States is Australia. Why trash our environment to have lithium mined here? Australia is as dependable as you can get.

(13,538 posts)And then theres all the OTHER components needed. Its all just a dangerous game of growing dependence. China is controlling more & more of the mineral supplies; even in other countries. Electric cars are not the answer. Hybrids are actually a MUCH better option than total electric.

(12,598 posts)- and that is what the tax credits encourage.
I agree - the U.S, has also got on top of rare earth minerals - but that is the same hurdle whether raw lithium
is sourced from Australia, or environmentally fragile sites in the U.S.
We are on the same page - getting out of dependence on China and wobbly South American countries. But no country in the Indo Pacific has stood up to China like Australia - loosing almost all of its exports to CCP Land other than iron ore. They would welcome being able to export more Lithium to us.

(12,598 posts)I don't know what China expected. Bully the hell out of Australia, to teach them a lesson, and then see what happens? As per Russia, any country that deals with China must know the CCP will weaponize trade against them. While the GOP was shooting up Koch Bros money, China set sail to become the Saudi Arabia of lithium batteries.
