TSA intercepts record number of firearms at airport checkpoints in 2022, most of them loaded

Source: CNN

CNN — The number of firearms that TSA officers intercepted at airport security checkpoints in 2022 is the highest on record for a single year – and the vast majority of the weapons were loaded, the US Transportation Security Administration said Friday. TSA officers caught 6,301 firearms at checkpoints this year as of Friday, such as in carry-on bags.

About 88% of the firearms were loaded, the administration said. The previous record was 5,972 firearms caught in 2021, 86% of which were loaded, the TSA said. The record comes as daily passenger volume is nearing pre-pandemic levels.

Numbers of people going through checkpoints daily have been higher this year than in 2021 and approaching the numbers in 2019, according to the TSA. The TSA recently increased the maximum civil penalty for firearms violations to $14,950, it said Friday. That’s up from $13,910.

While passengers can put unloaded firearms in checked baggage assuming they follow certain guidelines, they are prohibited from taking them through TSA security checkpoints in carry-on bags, even if they have a concealed weapon permit. “When a passenger brings a firearm to the checkpoint, this consumes significant security resources and poses a potential threat to transportation security, in addition to being very costly for the passenger,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in a news release.

The TSA usually calls for police assistance, but these guns need to be confiscated permanently. The common excuse is that the person “forgot” they had a gun. More likely, they think they have a right to carry a gun even if it endangers other people.

careless about your firearm, you shouldn’t own one.

2. All these people shouldn’t just be fined, but prosecuted.

Over 6,000 people just FORGOT they put an often loaded weapon in their carryon bag?

I agree, if they really are that careless and forgetful, they shouldn't own one and if they are stupid enough to think they can get a gun through airport security, they have some serious problems.

Makes one wonder if they just figure that since TSA are like cops, they'll just wave them through.

Even with the number of flights per day, many of them (from 2% - 3%) were cancelled for whatever reason, which has been the bane of the industry the past couple years, but the other thing is the "trend" of confiscations that has increased year over year.

I think the fine should be a lot higher than that. I wonder how many get through.

Is there any good argument for carrying a loaded weapon onto an airplane?

Why is this a surprise. If a firearm is not loader it is no
better than a stick, a rock or dirt clod. But it does grab
a person attention.

Make this a grounding offense, if nothing else. Put them on the "No Fly" list - permanently!
They're just going to try it again at another airport, if they aren't permanently grounded.

They really believe an added $1,040 is going to make a difference? Really? If it didn’t (it actually got worse) at $13,910, how will this help?

And how many actually paid that? And did a judge reduce it because he thought it was excessive?

This is pathetic and won’t do squat.

If its loaded then $3000. The max fine mentioned in the OP is only for an extreme case.
