Two dead, several wounded after shooting central Paris

Source: Reuters

PARIS, Dec 23 (Reuters) - A shooter killed two people and wounded four others in a gun attack near a Kurdish cultural centre in Paris on Friday, the prosecutor's office said.

Multiple gunshots were fired in the Rue d'Enghien, a street lined with small shops and cafes in the capital's 10th arrondissement, sowing panic. Armed police guarded a security cordon and several ambulances were at the scene, live television images showed.

"A gun attack has taken place. Thank you to the security forces for their swift action," tweeted deputy Mayor Emmanuel Gregoire. "Thoughts for the victims and those who witnessed this drama."

An investigation into murder, manslaughter and aggravated violence has been opened, the Paris prosecutor's office said. A 69-year-old man had been arrested and was in detention, the prosecutor's office added. The incident was over, it said.

Sadly here in the U.S., this kind of thing is happening hundreds of times *hourly* but obviously not so much in Paris. It is making international news...

I can't think of a person from any other group that would want to violently attack near a Kurdish cultural center.

My earlier assumptions were having to do with inter-ethnic conflict taking place outside said country. Something similar to what happened with No. Ireland back in the day.

Authorities said they had arrested a 69-year-old man, who Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said had recently been freed from detention while awaiting trial for a sabre attack on a migrant camp in Paris a year ago. He was convicted in June of committing violent acts with a weapon in 2016, and had lodged an appeal.

Clashes have erupted in Paris after three people were killed in a shooting at a Kurdish cultural centre that the French government said appeared to have been racially motivated.

French media reported that a 69-year-old man opened fire on a group of people at the Ahmet-Kaya centre on Rue d’Enghien in the 10th arrondissement on Friday morning. Shots were also fired at a hairdresser’s and a restaurant in the street. Three people have been wounded, one critically.

Prosecutors said police detained the alleged gunman, who had previous convictions for assault and possession of an illegal weapon, and seized a weapon within minutes of the shooting. He was wounded in the face and taken to hospital.
