China estimates 37 million infected with COVID in a single day

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Yonnie3 (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: New York Post

Nearly 37 million people may have contracted COVID-19 in China earlier this week, making the country's viral outbreak the world's largest.

Minutes from an internal meeting of the National Health Commission (NHC) revealed that as many as 248 million people - nearly 18% of China's population - came down with the virus in the first 20 days of December, as a surge that began in Beijing is now spreading to rural regions, Bloomberg News reported.

It is unclear how Chinese health officials arrived at that estimate, as the country's network of PCR testing booths were shut down earlier this month.

In a different news story yesterday, I saw estimates for 1,000,000 infection daily and 5,000 dead per day.

https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-12-22/china-is-likely-seeing-1-million-covid-cases-5-000-deaths-a-day

If COVID progresses there like it did elsewhere, those who eventually die usually linger for weeks after initial infection. So that means the death rate will really explode over the next few weeks to months.

The CCP kicked the can down the road with the "zero COVID" policy, and refused to allow western vaccines to be used.

Their citizens are paying the price now.

China has admitted to calculating Covid deaths in a way that downplays the numbers. Covid cases are different.

"Airfinity Ltd." apparently modeled that estimate using "provincial data". I'm not seeing citations of any paper or data, so this claim doesn't seem well-supported.

The reporting on the crematoria in China is legit, so there certainly is a problem over there. So, who knows.

He thought he could bully a pandemic away by locking people up for weeks.

Not this pandemic. It lurks below the surface, ready to explode into the open whenever a population of unprotected people is available.

A sensible person would have accepted the donated vaccines and protected their population, which means protecting their industry and their national security.

I sincerely hope their Pulitburo decides Xi is a liability because he is. I shudder to think about how many people there will die.

Even if these new variants don't leave China so quickly, the medicines they produce and export around the world will suddenly be kept in China and shortages will appear everywhere, including those to treat post covid infections like Strep A, etc.

Ibuprofen, amoxicillin, acetaminophen and more.

The effects on the world's supply chain if China shuts down because so many are sick will be epic. If the government isn't going to continue to fund COVID research, tests, vaccinations, etc., we could be back to where we were in the winter of 2020/21.
