An initial two busloads were taken to local shelters, according to an administration official. More buses arrived outside the vice presidents residence later Saturday evening. A CNN team saw migrants being dropped off, with some migrants wearing only T-shirts in the freezing weather. They were given blankets and put on another bus that went to a local church.
Tatiana Laborde, managing director of SAMU First Response, said her group was prepared for Saturday nights arrivals. Busloads of migrants have been arriving in Washington weekly since April.
The DC community has been welcoming buses from Texas anytime theyve come since April, she said. Christmas Eve and freezing cold weather is no different. We are always here welcoming folks with open arms.
Its not clear who is responsible for sending the migrants to the Naval Observatory, though CNN reported earlier this year that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott had sent buses of migrants north, including to a location outside Harris home.

(658 posts)This doesnt really fit the definition they use for human trafficking -
Human trafficking, also known as trafficking in persons, is a crime that involves compelling or coercing a person to provide labor or services, or to engage in commercial sex acts. The coercion can be subtle or overt, physical or psychological. https://www.justice.gov/humantrafficking/what-is-human-trafficking
While fraud or coercion might be argued, these actions seem to lack the forced labor or sex aspects to fit the DoJ definition.
If the adult passengers agree to the transport, I don't know what law is being broken. Not saying they are not breaking the law, just that I don't know which one or ones they are. Given the false pretenses I assume some form of fraud might apply.
Or so it seems to me.

42 --- Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me. 44 They also will answer, Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you? 45 He will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me. 46 Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.

(1,766 posts)But not 100%. Maybe not even 90%.
Blondes and blue-eyed people existed in the Middle East, even in antiquity. Not many, but there were some. The Romans brought some with them, and they, let's say, mingled with the locals, same as everywhere else they went. Alexander the Great's armies brought some back after their expedition to India; several regions along that path are chock full of blondes with blue eyes. Like the Caucasian steppes. Much of which is closer by land to Jerusalem than Rome.
It behooves us to remember that people were far more mobile in antiquity and the Middle Ages than most of us realize. And that meant that certain recessive genes were far more common and far-flung as well.
So saying that a particular Jew of a time period had to have dark hair/eyes is like saying that all Jews will look like Woody Allen.
And that's just not true.
So likely--yes. Definitely? No.

Look at some of the fair haired Arabs in congress. You would be surprised: John Sununu, Mitch Daniels etc etc
And then there are typical Arabs, such as Danny Thomas. Danny wasn't fair, but he certainly doesn't look like he came from Africa or India.

Have upfront meetings with their drivers; have a plan.
If a driver feels that this is what is occurring; have a contact number in place and immediately call a superior within the company to show up and represent the company and refuse service.
They cannot be forced to walk to Washington.

(169,179 posts)always a nasty piece of work during the city's biweekly then weekly covid briefings during the height of the pandemic. I haven't watched local news broadcasts in ages.
There was a story I heard this morning about a local Ukrainian cultural organization that recently received a grant so they could expand their staff for outreach to help with the Ukrainian refugees. Philly has the U.S.'s 2nd largest number of resident Ukrainians behind NYC.
One thing that did make the news is how many in Ukraine are now eschewing the Eastern Orthodox celebration of Christmas (as embraced in Russia) with the earlier Christmas celebration that recognizes today for services. Alternately many of the Latin American migrants are Catholic and there has and always will be that Protestant vs Catholic battle (when it suits them given the SCOTUS make up).

Philadelphias Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center plans to step up support efforts for Ukrainian newcomers in 2023

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) Philadelphias Ukrainian Educational and Cultural Center (UECC) has plans to step up their support efforts in the new year for Ukrainian newcomers. The center was awarded an $84,000 grant by the Welcome Fund, an organization that helps support people seeking refuge in the U.S.
We are excited and thankful to Welcome US for making this possible, said Volodymyr Kravtsov, UECCs executive director. Kravtsov said the grant will allow the center to welcome more people and provide available resources to their sponsors.
Showing an attitude of acceptance and providing support will allow them to feel welcome and ease the navigation process in their new environment, Kravtsov said. Kravtsov also said the funds will help them expand their office, which is currently only staffed with two people.
He added they receive a lot of calls each day from sponsors and newcomers with various questions and requests and do their best to keep up and provide them with as much information and help as possible. Natalie Firko, UECC board president, said their new staff will be able to focus specifically on the newcomers, their sponsors and their needs.

(3,778 posts)Our Scripture lesson for today is from Matthew, Chapter 25, Verses 31 through 46.
31 When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34 Then the King will say to those on his right, Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.
37 Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?
40 The King will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.
41 Then he will say to those on his left, Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.
Here ends the lesson.

Calling out heresy is also part of Christian responsibility.
1 Corinthians 5 where Paul instructs people to hold others inside the church accountable, but not those who are outside the church.
These people are damaging Christianity therefor they need to be called out privately and then in the public square.
Even if you are not Christian the issue is the same. Treating strangers in our land like this is wrong.

Now when [the Magi] had gone, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him.
So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt. (Matthew 2: 13-14)

(3,101 posts)First of all, moving refugees to other states and locales, such as New York, San Francisco, Boston and Washinton D.C, is not, in and of itself, a bad idea. But it should be done in an orderly and humane way, with proper supervision and planning. Each time these LEGAL IMMIGRANTS are moved, government and NGOs should be alerted and prepared for their arrivals, so as to provide proper assistance.
When Republican Governor's round up these refugees to bus them to an unsuspecting location, in the dead of night, without proper clothing, housing, food or medicine, here's what I suggest.
The receiving city does what it currently does, which is to provide humane treatment in an orderly fashion. But here's the rub, the bus driver should be arrested for human trafficking and the bus confiscated as evidence. The driver will undoubtedly be bailed out, but the bus remains impounded until trial. That could take months or years. Who cares if there is no conviction in the end? What company wants their busses impounded and hire a lawyer to legally serve their driver. And maybe, somebody will turn state's evidence and a real case emerges. If no bus company will take this risk, that would force the Republican Governors to reach agreements with the host cities to move our fellow human beings to other locations in the aforementioned humane and orderly way.

that's enough for an arrest and the impoundment of the bus. That would put an abrupt end to this nonsense.
Probable cause is the lowest bar on the judicial ladder, far below beyond a reasonable doubt.
I respectively disagree and do hold the private bus company and the driver as accomplices in what I conclude, is not only an immoral stunt, but an illegal stunt.

(135,366 posts)The White House condemned Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas after busloads of migrants were reportedly dropped off outside Vice President Kamala Harris' residence in Washington, DC, on one of the coldest Christmas Eves on record in the nation's capital.
"Governor Abbott abandoned children on the side of the road in below freezing temperatures on Christmas Eve without coordinating with any Federal or local authorities," a White House representative, Abdullah Hasan, said in a statement. "This was a cruel, dangerous, and shameful stunt."
Democrats have blamed the situation on Abbott, who since April has bused migrants from Texas to major Democratic-led cities including Washington, New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia to protest the Biden administration's immigration policies.
"As we have repeatedly said, we are willing to work with anyone Republican or Democrat alike on real solutions, like the comprehensive immigration reform and border security measures President Biden sent to Congress on his first day in office," Hasan added, "but these political games accomplish nothing and only put lives in danger."
