Teary Bolsonaro calls loss unfair, condemns violence, flies to Florida
Source: Washington Post
Two days before leaving office, ending a tumultuous four years as the race-baiting, Amazon-developing, coronavirus-downplaying, vaccine-skeptical leader of Latin Americas largest country, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro remained defiant in a teary farewell address on Friday, defending his record and saying the election that led to his ouster was not impartial, but condemning violence against the result.
Then he flew to Florida, Brazilian media reported, where in the past he has met with former president Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago. He apparently planned to skip the inauguration of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Sunday, when the outgoing leader traditionally presents the presidential sash to his successor, a ceremony intended to reaffirm the countrys young democracy.
Bolsonaros remarks, live-streamed for nearly an hour Friday morning, were his most extensive since he lost the election in October. He still has not conceded the race, but acknowledged that a new administration would take over on Sunday.
Nothing is lost, he told supporters. Brazil is a fantastic country, and Brazil doesnt end on January first.
Concern is growing over security around Lulas inauguration in Brasília on Sunday. Bolsonaro supporters have camped outside army installations since his Oct. 30 defeat to call for a military coup to keep him in power. A group of radical bolsonaristas set fire to buses and tried to invade federal police headquarters in the capital this month after the arrest of a Bolsonaro supporter who was accused of having expressly summoned armed people to prevent the certification of elected officials.

(17,146 posts)I remember when Orlando Bosch, bomb-murderer of Orlando Letelier on the streets of Washington DC; and bomber of Cubana Flight 455, killing all 73 on board, fled to Miami. It was fiesta time in the streets. Welcome home, Hero!
The Justice Department sought to deport him to Venezuela as a terrorist. Half of Miami became apoplectic with rage, demonstrating and threatening violence if Bosch was deported. George H W. Bush & Jeb Bush intervened and Bosch was granted residency.
Bosch was an anti-Castro terrorist and CIA operative who led clandestine raids on Cuba. In 1964, he was caught towing a radio-operated torpedo through Miami in rush-hour traffic.
I remember when Nicaragua's Anastasio Somoza Debayle, another CIA patron, fled to Miami on a private airliner, bringing his family and a large portion of the National Treasury. they landed at Homestead Air Force Base and there was a caravan up Dixie Highway into their swank digs in Downtown Miami. Fortunately, Jimmy Carter was president, and Carter refused to grant them residency. Somoza fled to Paraguay, where he was assassinated a year later.
I became affiliated with a colony of Jamaicans who, because of their exploitation and the deteriorating political atmosphere, fled to Miami and established a compound on a five-acre mango orchard. I moved a mobile home onto the property and worked on their compound by day, and guarded the property at night. The way they treated their workers made me understand why they had to raid the treasury and run to Miami in exile.
Just a few Miami terrorist stories of many.

I remember when Somoza fled to Paraguay. A bazooka got him if memory serves.
