McCarthy's bid for speaker to continue, says Trump backs him
Source: AP
WASHINGTON (AP) House Republicans will open the second day of the new Congress much like the first with leader Kevin McCarthy trying to become House speaker despite losing in multiple rounds of voting that threw the new GOP majority into chaos.
It was the first time in 100 years that a nominee for House speaker could not take the gavel on the first vote, but McCarthy appeared undeterred. Instead, he vowed to fight to the finish, encouraged, he said, by former President Donald Trump to end the disarray and pull the Republican Party together.
The House is scheduled to convene Wednesday after the stalemate essentially forced all other business to a standstill, waiting on Republicans to elect a speaker. Today, is that the day I wanted to have? No, McCarthy told reporters late Tuesday at the Capitol after a series of closed-door meetings.
McCarthy said Trump wants him to stay in the race and told him to bring an end to the House Republican chaos and pull the party together. The former president wants to see the Republicans united to be able to accomplish the exact things we said wed do, McCarthy said. Asked if he would drop out, McCarthy said, Its not going to happen.

that he'd be Trump's mouthpiece. Adjacent to the bus but not yet under it. For what that's worth.

(39,152 posts)of this after every vote yesterday:
First movement was 3 "variations on a theme".
And today's Second movement should be interesting... perhaps more reflective and decrescendo in tone?
By him again embracing insurrection, he continues to blow up bridges, not only to any moderate Democrats, but to any conservative ones - all who reject 45, his criminality, and what was done January 6 that McCarthy was a part of.
And the fact that he would even concede to having his majority spend the next 2 years doing nothing but revenge hearings that accomplish nothing but generating more red meat for a tinier and tinier fraction of the American public, should be the last straw.

As if you can accomplish anything when you're only 1/2 of 1/3 of the government.
Besides, you thugs never said what you'd do, about anything. All you did during the mid-term campaign was wage your standard idiotic culture wars and whine about petty grievances.
Maybe you call that an agenda, but the rest of us call it a tantrum.

(169,759 posts)as "razor thin" so too do they need to keep pounding on that with the GOP because as long as something as little as 5 loons object, they will have no choice except to reach out to Democrats for enough votes, something that their ingrained "Hastert Rule" ( "majority of the majority" ) tends to forbid them from doing.
I.e., they are functioning as if they had this huge "wave mandate" and they didn't.
I did just read this morning that McCarthy is looking at a strategy where a pile of his Caucus consider voting "Present" to reduce the threshold for getting the votes for Speaker -
by Emily Brooks - 01/03/23 11:29 PM ET
(snip)
The House Speaker is elected by a majority of all those voting for a specific Speaker candidate, not necessarily all members. Those voting present and those who are absent do not count toward that total, lowering the threshold. Former House Speakers Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and John Boehner (R-Ohio) each won the Speakership with just 216 votes in 2021 and 2015, respectively.
In the three Tuesday votes, all 434 members voted in all ballots, putting the majority threshold at 218. In the first and second ballots, McCarthy got 203 votes, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.) got 212 and 19 McCarthy opponents voted for other candidates. In the third vote, a 20th member joined the detractors, putting McCarthy at 202.
It is not clear, however, how McCarthy could not only win over 11 in the group to vote for him, but get the other nine to not vote for a candidate. Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) dismissed the strategy of McCarthy getting across the line with present votes outside a separate meeting in the Capitol with McCarthy allies and detractors in the office of House GOP Whip Tom Emmer (Minn.).
If hes literally trying to patchwork votes together, to scrape together the votes by trying to carve out present votes in hopes that people dont show up or something, I just dont see that as the right path to a strong leadership position, Roy said. Roy also cast strong doubts on the notion that any of the 20 Republicans who opposed McCarthy would play ball and vote present on Wednesday. I definitely dont see it, he said.

Those examples given about the lower numbers of votes can often be similar to this go-around with only 434 instead of 435 because of vacancies (which is the case here - a (D) vacancy that The Hill neglected to mention).

(32,321 posts)McCarthy will need to get 213 votes because Jeffries is going to get 212 votes. There are members of the Freedumb caucus who will never vote for Mccarthy or vote present. Gaetz, Boebert, Roy, Perry, Jordan, Biggs.
Go for it McCarthy, I hope he has his eggs in a basket or Jeffries is going to be Speaker of the House. Do it Kevin.

(169,759 posts)He can't lose more than 4 or he's toast. Otherwise, he'd have to come begging to Democrats or per the article I posted, try to convince 9 of those 19 or 20 who voted against him (that 20th only changed to vote against him after 2 earlier failed votes), to vote "present", that would be 434 - 9 = 425 / 2 = 212.5 or "213" if you round up, so that "213" would be enough to take him over the top, and be more than Jeffries 'solid "212".
That group of 19/20 are pretty dead set against him though.

(15,426 posts)says our people can solidly vote for Jeffries instead of abstaining, and if we can get enough 'sane' establishment Republicans to do same, then we will essentially still have the Speakership.
What is your take on this? I fear I am a bit ignorant about House procedures.
BumRushDaShow
(169,759 posts)Jeffries just needs 6 of them.
The problem is whether the GOP caucus head explosions if that happened, would generate even more distraction than what is already going on now.
It's possible that Scalise could get enough (even if they had some sit it out as "Present" ) or there is some "dark horse moderate" GOPer who might be part of the "Problem Solvers Caucus" who could garner enough (D) votes - as long as there are some strings and stipulations attached. I.e., there have been ideas floated about "power sharing" for instance.
I just can't stomach Jordan spending 24/7 the next 2 years as Judiciary Committee Chair pontificating and preparing for a clown show impeachment. That is why he wants that Committee Chair position and also supports removal of Schiff from pretty much any Committee.

(74 posts)This is based on a tweet quoting news source, according to it McCarthy fears a 4th ballot will show him losing more support. Asking to adjourn till tomorrow will buy him time. Problem with this is that McCarthy will need 218 votes to adjourn and Democrats are likely to oppose adjournment
