WASHINGTON (AP) House Republicans flailed through a long second day of fruitless balloting Wednesday, unable to either elect their leader Kevin McCarthy as House speaker or come up with a new strategy to end the political chaos that has tarnished the start of their new majority. Yet McCarthy wasnt giving up, even after the fourth, fifth and sixth ballots produced no better outcome and he was left trying to call off a night-time session.
Even that was controversial, as the House voted 216-214 amid shouting and crowding to adjourn for the night. No deal yet, McCarthy said shortly before that as he left a lengthy closed-door dinner-time meeting with key holdouts and his own allies. But a lot of progress. No progress at all was evident though the day of vote-after-vote-after vote as Republicans tried to elevate McCarthy into the top job.
The ballots were producing almost the same outcome, 20 conservative holdouts still refusing to support him, and leaving him far short of the 218 typically needed to win the gavel. In fact, McCarthy saw his support slip to 201, as one fellow Republican switched to vote simply present. Seeing no quick way out of the political standoff, Republicans voted abruptly late in the day to adjourn for a few hours as they desperately searched for an endgame to the chaos of their own making.
They were due back in the evening, but McCarthy wanted to take a break until Thursday. I think people need to work a little more, McCarthy said. I dont think a vote tonight would make any difference. But a vote in the future could. But even a simple motion to adjourn erupted into a floor fight, with Democrats and some Republicans insisting on a lengthy vote.

Am putting this here for posterity since they changed it now -
CSPAN just mentioned Tapper tweeting that someone was going to put Scalise up for nomination and that is when the call for adjourning came up.

House GOPer tells me there was talk of a fellow McCarthy-supporter nominating @SteveScalise to be Speaker tonight, which is one of the reasons @GOPLeader McCarthy called for immediate vote to adjourn until noon Thursday

Article and headline of course updated.

WASHINGTON (AP) House Republicans flailed through a long second day of fruitless balloting Wednesday, unable to either elect their leader Kevin McCarthy as House speaker or come up with a new strategy to end the political chaos that has tarnished the start of their new majority. Yet McCarthy not only wasnt giving up, he was sounding optimistic after calling off a night-time session.
No deal yet, he said as he left a lengthy closed-door meeting with key holdouts. But a lot of progress. No progress at all was evident though the day of vote-after-vote-after vote. For a fourth, fifth and sixth time, Republicans tried to elevate McCarthy into the top job as the House plunged deeper into disarray. But the votes were producing almost the same outcome, 20 conservative holdouts still refusing to support him, and leaving him far short of the 218 typically needed to win the gavel.
In fact, McCarthy saw his support slip to 201, as one fellow Republican switched to vote simply present. Seeing no quick way out of the political standoff, Republicans voted abruptly late in the day to adjourn as they desperately searched for an endgame to the chaos of their own making. They were due back in the evening, but the House was at a standstill. I think people need to work a little more, McCarthy said. I dont think a vote tonight would make any difference. But a vote in the future could.
McCarthy, the California Republican, vowed to keep fighting despite the grueling spectacle, unlike any in modern times, that threw the new majority into tumult a day earlier. Animated private discussions broke out on the chamber floor between McCarthy supporters and detractors searching for an endgame. Well, its Groundhog Day, said Rep. Kat Cammack, R-Fla., in nominating McCarthy on the sixth ballot.

(2,499 posts)....then blame the democrats for not doing anything during this current session of congress. Sort of like how they defunded public education and blamed democrats for that as well.

(1,337 posts)Of course we will laugh about it, but when it becomes too dragged out, they'll be no pay for the yet to be sworn in members and staff, and living in the DC area ain't cheep. And no one will afford private security detail that is desperately needed since after J6. Then you got senate bills that will not get through as the result of this squabble. I'm not laughing, they need to get to the people's business as elected.

(129,636 posts)Umm... The FY 23 Approrpriations bill was signed by the President on December 29, 2022 after the thing was actually put on a plane with a staffer, and flown to St. Croix, U.S. VI, where he was on vacation (so he could sign it 'in person" vs through an auto-pen).
So there is no "pay issue" due to the clown show in the House.
The Senate is pretty much "In recess subject to the call of the chair" (with pro forma sessions every 3 days) and with no expectation to do any actual work until near the end of the month AFTER the MLK Holiday (Jan 16). They won't be back in session for votes, etc., until January 23 - https://www.senate.gov/legislative/2023_schedule.htm

Pres. Biden calls McConnell a man of his word for being among 19 Senate GOPers who helped get bill passed in 2021.
On working w/ newly divided Congress, Biden says, We can work together, we can get things done, we can move the nation forward, we just have to drop our egos
