McCarthy makes fresh concessions to try to woo hard-right Republicans in speaker bid
Source: Washington Post
House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy has made fresh concessions to a group of 20 GOP lawmakers in hopes of ending their blockade of his speakership ahead of votes Thursday, a stunning reversal that, if adopted, would weaken the position of speaker and ensure a tenuous hold on the job.
During late-hour negotiations Wednesday, McCarthy (R-Calif.) agreed to the proposed rule changes, according to four people familiar with the talks who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private deliberations. In a major allowance to the hard-right Republicans, McCarthy offered to lower from five to one the number of members required to sponsor a resolution to force a vote on ousting the speaker a change that the California Republican had previously said he would not accept.
McCarthy also expressed a willingness to place more members of the staunchly conservative House Freedom Caucus on the House Rules Committee, which debates legislation before its moved to the floor. And he relented on allowing floor votes to institute term limits on members and to enact specific border policy legislation.
It remained unclear early Thursday whether the concessions could move the holdouts, several of whom have said they will not support McCarthy no matter what. The House is scheduled to reconvene at noon Thursday for more voting. But some moderates have grown irate at the moves, after pledging last month they would never support a rules package that gives one House member the power to vacate the speaker.

They need to call them "extremist right" but then I guess "hard right" is better than the years of their coddling of them as if they were mainstream "conservatives" (although I suppose their whole mainstream has moved in that far right direction anyway).

As a note, this guy represents the district that got devastated by Hurricane Ian less than 4 months ago.
Yes - Ft. Meyers, Naples, Cape Coral - ALL of this is his jurisdiction.

(36,147 posts)behind the scenes, Koch and his network are loving their takeover of rules and whatever skewing of minority and individual power that can exact. Koch is on a mission to dismantle this govt one bag man (and loon) at a time. He's already stated more than once that the US Constitution is a failed document. He's been working on getting an Article 5 (?) constitutional convention to make his fascist dismantling happen.
Moving the mainstream hard right has always been authoritarian oligarchs' goal. Power politics over empowerment politics has always been their means.

(14,049 posts)I predict that he will make a minor gain today - maybe 2-5 votes. That may encourage him to stay in for another day or two.
But there are probably 6-10 hard liners that will keep voting against him. Eventually, he has to drop out and they will get someone wacky enough to get 218 GOP votes. It almost certainly has to be someone who voted against certification of the 2020 Presidential Election.

(129,634 posts)There are members who are GOP who are part of the "Problem Solvers Caucus" elected from swing districts (some BARELY winning their seats), who will not go for the far right loons. These are people who are currently voting for McCarthy but if McCarthy drops out, they are NOT going to vote for a Boebert.
This is why Scalise's name keeps coming up as a "known" far-righter but a couple notches back from extreme, who is also knowledgeable (having been in a couple leadership roles) of the inner workings. But then to get someone like him in over the swampy-20, they would need (D) support and right now, that is DOA.

Meanwhile, even if he did manage to persuade a few of them to support him, he could easily lose some moderates in the process as his concessions are too extreme.
