MOSCOW, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday ordered a 36-hour ceasefire in Ukraine over Orthodox Christmas, the first major truce of the more than 10-month long war that has killed tens of thousands and devastated swathes of Ukraine.

Putin ordered the ceasefire to begin on Jan. 6, the Kremlin said. Many Orthodox Christians, including those living in Russia and Ukraine, celebrate Christmas on Jan. 6-7.

Patriarch Kirill of Moscow called earlier on Thursday for both sides of the war in Ukraine to observe a Christmas truce.

"Taking into account the appeal of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, I instruct the Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation to introduce a ceasefire regime along the entire line of contact of the parties in Ukraine from 12.00 on January 6, 2023 to 24.00 on January 7, 2023," Putin said in the order.

Russian troops must hold fire for 36 hours from 1200 on Jan. 6, the Kremlin said. Many Orthodox Christians, including those living in Russia and Ukraine, celebrate Christmas on Jan. 6-7.

Patriarch Kirill of Moscow, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, called on Thursday for both sides of the war in Ukraine to observe a Christmas truce, a step dismissed by Kyiv as a cynical trap.

"Taking into account the appeal of His Holiness Patriarch Kirill, I instruct the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation to introduce a ceasefire regime along the entire line of contact of the parties in Ukraine from 12.00 on January 6, 2023 to 24.00 on January 7, 2023," Putin said in the order.

It's all bullshit. Putin doesn't give a whit about a Christmas pause. He's mass murderer. Why would he care?

6. They've had several major ammo storage facilities blown up under them

and have lost around 2000 killed because they're stupidly housing recruits in with the stored ammo. They need the time to scramble for men and more ammo.

Let's hope Ukraine doesn't give it to them. It won't play well to people looking for warm fuzzies, but there are precious few warm fuzzies to be had when you're trying to kick an imperial power the hell out of your country.

You want warm fuzzies, look for the videos of the Ukrainian forces rescuing cats, dogs, and old people from piles of rubble. Don't look for them when a dictator is trying to regroup his forces to keep pursuing a land grab in someone else's country.

13. PR attempt.

Russia assumes defensive positions for a day and doesn't make any offense. Ukraine ignores the cease fire and now Russia can make a PR claim Ukraine is not even interested in a holiday cease fire.

Best move would to be for Ukraine to also assume a defensive posture and get more supplies in, thereby preparing and denying a PR point by Putin.

And IIRC, many in Ukraine decided to purposely not celebrate the Eastern Orthodox Christmas (to disassociate from Russia) and do it when westerners were doing it in December.
