Oklahoma 'Millstone Act' seeks to ban gender-affirming care under age of 26

Source: The Hill

An Oklahoma senate bill filed late Wednesday would prevent a person under the age of 26 from accessing gender-affirming health care, the latest sign that conservatives are seeking to block the procedure for not only children, but people well into adulthood.

The bill filed ahead of the legislature’s February start would bar health care providers in Oklahoma from administering or recommending gender-affirming medical care including puberty blockers, hormones and surgeries for patients younger than 26 years old, punishable by an unclassified felony conviction and the possible revocation of their medical license for “unprofessional conduct.”

The measure would also prohibit public funds from being used to either “directly or indirectly” provide gender-affirming health care to an individual younger than 26 and bar the state Medicaid program from covering procedures related to a person’s gender transition.

The legislation being introduced by Oklahoma GOP state Sen. David Bullard, who last year authored a new state law that prohibits transgender youth from using school restrooms or locker rooms consistent with their gender identity. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has filed a lawsuit on behalf of three transgender students against that law.

So is that the magic age when the state can't control your body anymore?

Hell, why not make it 86? Just as random.

Science has shown that our brains don't fully mature until around age 25. In particular, the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for, among other things, personality expression, decision making, and moderating social behavior, is one of the last regions of the brain to finish its development.

This really isn't much different from the "scientific racism" of the Third Reich. They're taking science and bending it into a cudgel for use against those they dislike. They can point to this truth about the human brain and use it as a justification for this law, even though science itself isn't making a connection from that fact to this endpoint. They're weaponizing and misusing science.

That's my guess, at any rate. I may well be giving them far too much credit. They might've picked a number out of a hat and it could just as easily have been 99.

At that age you can enlist or in an emergency be drafted into the military. You vote. You are legally an adult. Don’t think this can pass constitutional or legal muster. Also will add that in many states, Oklahoma included, minors can can be tried and treated as an adult in criminal cases.

The hypocrisy Is smelling rank.

Age of majority is established as 18, so this falls flat. But that's not the point. They know it'll fall flat. They're sending a message and chipping away at foundations. Being able to point to some scientific backing, even misused scientific backing, gives them the thinnest veneer of credibility.

The enforcement mechanism in the bill is - besides felonies for everyone directly involved - a promise to cut off funding to any hospitals, health care groups, etc., that might provide services for trans people.

No joining the army, no signing contracts, no marriage until they're 26.

And it STILL would have nothing to do with the State prohibiting forms of medical care backed by every major medical association simply because the legislators belong to the American Christian Nazi Party.

Yeah too much credit indeed. 18 is an adult thus you can do whatever the hell you please with your body, your name or whatever. I'm not buying into that shit about our cortex being fully developed being a reason to ban adults. They just picked a high age to be a bunch of fucking fascist assholes like always.

The law says 18, so be it. Science says our brains aren't fully mature until the mid-20s, but that doesn't mean the age of majority should jump to 25.

And yes, they're assholes. But there are smart assholes (relatively speaking, of course) in their ranks and there are the bog-standard stupid assholes. The smart assholes are just smart enough to misuse science to give their bullshit the thinnest possible veneer of credibility. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if they pointed to this research when pressed on their reasoning for picking that number. It'd be a crock of shit, of course, but it wouldn't surprise me.

I don't know why every single women or LGBTQ person doesn't exit that state like they were shot out of a cannon on that 18th birthday. I fled NC and they weren't as bad. Same religious nuts who thought the meaning of freedom was the freedom to bully everybody around them, though.

LGBT people, people going into a bathroom that they feel comfortable in, science and scientists,
facts, flag burning, freedom of religion that means freedom from religion too, black and brown people,
teachers, drag shows (don't like drag shows? don't go to them), football players kneeling, gun laws,
the sciences of ecology/climate change/biodiversity, and on and on are their targets.

I will bet $50 right now that David Bullard will be caught coming out of a gay bar or meeting guys
on a man for man app on his cell phone in 18 months or less because even I being a dull straight
white guy I have found that people who spend time on this hateful crap almost always have some
issues with their sexuality.

From Mr. Bullard. What a shit.

The sort our parents took us on either for sightseeing or to see our grandparents but with sightseeing along the way.

But with two of us in the family being trans...at best it'll just be a jaunt from the SF Bay Area up to BC and back when it's COVID safe.

There were so many places on our itinerary that we just don't feel at all safe visiting or even driving through any more.
