Republican McCarthy gains support in 12th U.S. House leadership vote
Source: Reuters
Republican Kevin McCarthy on Friday picked up some support from right-wing hardliners in the U.S. House of Representatives who have blocked his speakership bid, but it did not appear to be enough to end the deepest congressional dysfunction since before the Civil War.
In a 12th round of voting in four days, at least 10 Republicans who have opposed McCarthy voted for him on Friday, in a sign that his prospects may be improving after he offered the faction a range of concessions.
But at least five fellow Republicans voted against him as the roll was called, meaning he would likely fall short of the votes needed to win the speaker's gavel.
[snip]
Despite his optimism, some fellow Republican lawmakers said they did not expect him to garner enough votes from the 20 hardliners to ensure a majority that so far has eluded him.

(6,619 posts)It would be nice if a few Repuglicans with ethics and love of country and respect for the Constitution would cross over and vote for Jeffries just on principle alone. There are no good repugs left, unfortunately.

(13,834 posts)We don't have the majority anymore and it's unrealistic to imagine that a Democrat could win the race for Speaker. However, and this is probably pretty far fetched also, if all the Democrats got behind this mythical reasonable GOPer it would only take a handful of GOPer votes to put him/her over the top. There are quite a few GOPers in the House who'd be a far better choice for Speaker than McCarthy, plus with this scenario the whacko magats wouldn't be given key positions.

(13,470 posts)senior Republicans who would be in line for those committees. I would think those Republicans would not be happy to be cast aside for the likes of ignorant Boebert.
I wonder if McCarthys strategy is to get elected and then renege on his promises because even if one of the insurrectionists calls for his removal, that is unlikely to happen because I think it takes a 2/3rds vote to remove. Otherwise, the insurrectionists will be on some important committees, especially for finance, and they will try to shut the government down. They would not care about the credit of the US or a global recession because they would blame it all on Biden in 2024 and their voters would fall for it. Jeez, I despise these people.

(14,860 posts)to "give in" to what they wanted. Their only real remaining demand is for a batshit crazy hard right speaker instead of a crazy hard right speaker.
Its a mistake to think he wasn't happy to give them everything else they asked for (aside from the rule changes that may reduce his power slightly) because he wants it too.

If both Buck and the other R return that will up it back to 218.
There's only 5, but there may as well be 105. These holdouts want "not Kevin". The only thing McCarthy can offer them is to withdraw his name. I think he's given away everything else.
