No. 1 Georgia bullies TCU 65-7 to win 2nd consecutive title

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) Stetson Bennett flashed a wry grin as he walked off the field, stopping to hug coach Kirby Smart as the crowd roared.
It was all standing ovations and sideline snacks in the fourth quarter of college footballs most lopsided title game.
In emphatic and overwhelming fashion, Georgia became the first team to repeat as College Football Playoff national champions and left no doubt the Dawgs are the new bullies on the block.
Bennett threw two touchdown passes and ran for two scores in the first half as No. 1 Georgia demolished No. 3 TCU 65-7 on Monday night.

(10,845 posts)Alabama would have destroyed TCU as well.
I think UGA would have won the match up but it would be close not such an embarrassing display like we saw last night.

(3,496 posts)I mean at best there are 6 teams that have any legitimate shot at competing with the elite programs in college football. Top 2 get a bye, the other four play in. Have the games at the higher ranked team's stadium. Carting young kids off to a far away location is a distraction. The better team should get a home game. Having games in sunny locals (bowl games) gives too much advantage to teams from fair weather climates. I've often wondered how SEC teams would do in colder climates for playoff games.
Anyway, if you took 6 instead of 4 Alabama and Tennessee would have played in. And I feel both of those teams earned the right to play for a championship this year.

(102,285 posts)But neither Ann Arbor or Columbus are at altitude and we've seen plenty of NFL (and NCAA) teams play in snow/cold. Bring them into Denver/Boulder/Fort Collins, CO and that might be an impact/challenge.

(12,553 posts)It should never be more than 8. Really 4, the way it is now, but 8 would catch any team that might be undefeated in their weak Conference & start whining about "not getting a chance"
But there's never going to be a year that TWELVE teams are good enough to deserve a shot at the title

(182,826 posts)58: Georgia's 58-point margin of victory is the biggest in any bowl game and the second largest in a matchup between AP top-five teams. The loss is the sixth-largest defeat in TCU program history.
51 and 7: To put in perspective how lopsided the game was, Georgia ran 51 plays in its opponent's territory compared to just seven such plays for TCU.

(102,285 posts)at its best. Even in the third quarter when they rotated their young freshmen in, they played phenomenally well--obviously both mentally motivated to not let their NYE performance in the playoffs against OSU repeat but intensely psyched to be a rare "repeat" National Champion.
A good performance is not "bullying"... Were they playing their best? Yes. Did they have the breadth and depth of players to rotate them in and out to keep them fresh? Yes. Were they intensely motivated? Yes. Did they play overly aggressively leading to inordinate personal fouls or injuring the TCU players? NO. Was their strategy top-notch and well-executed? Yes
I cheered for TCU all season because they truly turned around a program that went 5-7 just a year ago. This was their Cinderella season. But, they do not yet have the strength of program to prevail against these big powerhouse teams. A good start, though and they should be proud of their play this season.
It was clear from the opening exchanges that TCU was out-gunned. Still, TCU kept in the game even though it was clearly going to be a rout.
Besides, the conferences rules were followed and these two teams earned their berths.
Too bad if some people wanted to watch something else. TCUs players and team showed sportsmanship in the face of an over-whelming force.
Yeah, the game wasnt exciting. Shit happens. Georgia deserves their title and TCU deserves our respect.

(5,313 posts)but they did not deserve to capture my attention as the third quarter got under way. This was the only championship game I remember turning off midway into the third quarter.
Michigan would have given GA a better game, even though it would have still been a rout.

(33,643 posts)And the term 'bullied' in sports is generally understood as meaning 'dominated them on the field and the scoreboard' as opposed to the literal meaning when used in other contexts.

(6,600 posts)Yes, they were outplayed on all levels but in all fairness they seemed to be having an off day.
They didnt play with their usual vigor. A couple of important players were out for injuries but it seemed that their hearts werent in it from the very beginning.
TCU had a great year and we are proud of them. I think that Georgia did a great job.

(4,986 posts)...and that TCU would get routed. I didn't think this game would be sooo lopsided, though.
