Rep. Katie Porter launches a U.S. Senate bid
Source: OC Register
Rep. Katie Porter is running for U.S. Senate in 2024. The Orange County Democrat announced her campaign on Tuesday, Jan. 10. Sen. Diane Feinstein, 89, has not yet said what her plans are for 2024, although she is expected to retire.
California needs a warrior in the Senate to stand up to special interests, fight the dangerous imbalance in our economy, and hold so-called leaders like Mitch McConnell accountable for rigging our democracy, Porter said on social media.
Porter recently won reelection to the 47th District, a coastal area that includes Irvine, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach and part of Huntington Beach, a tough battle against former state Assemblymember Scott Baugh, a Republican.
Porter is a former UC Irvine law professor who has become a leading Democratic voice in the House since she was first elected in 2018. In Congress, she sits on the Natural Resources and Oversight and Reform committees and shes a member of a bevy of caucuses.

Rep. Katie Porter, D-Calif., a progressive star who won re-election in November, on Tuesday announced her campaign for the Senate in 2024.
Especially in times like these, California needs a warrior in Washington. Thats exactly why Im announcing my candidacy, Porter said in a video.
Porters announcement comes amid uncertainty over whether California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, 89, will retire at the end of 2024.
Porter did not reference Feinstein in her video announcement, but said, its time for new leadership in the U.S. Senate.

(2,957 posts)DiFi's term ends in 2024. DiFi hasn't announced whether she'll run again. But, Katie has announced she's running anyway. So, If DiFi announces she's running for a 6th term, this will mean she will be be challenged at the primary by Porter.
Maybe Porter has some insider info that DiFi won't run again? Who knows. But I do agree that Sen. Feinstein's time has come and gone. As awesome as she's been, it truly is time for an evolution of Dem representation in congress.

(36,440 posts)Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) told Politico not to expect a U.S. Senate campaign announcement from him today, along with a veiled shot at Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) who did make an announcement.
Said Schiff: You dont announce a campaign in the middle of a natural disaster.
Meanwhile, Porters pollster David Binder put out a survey showing Porter leading Schiff, 37% to 26%, in a hypothetical top-two November election.

Exactly. With the damage from floods and landslides here in California, this isnt the time to make a political announcement
