Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders bans term 'Latinx' on her first day in office

The gender-neutral term won't be allowed for official use in state government, a move one Latino scholar slammed as part of the "anti-woke agenda."

Within hours of being sworn in as the new governor of Arkansas, Sarah Huckabee Sanders signed an executive order Tuesday banning the term "Latinx" from official use in the state government.
It is one of the first, if not the first, executive order of its kind, Tabitha Bonilla, an associate professor of human development and social policy at Northwestern University, told NBC News.
It was one of seven orders signed by Sanders, a Republican, right after taking the oath. The other ones focused on prohibiting Arkansas schools from teaching critical race theory, budgeting and spending as well as other government affairs.
Most of these executive orders are consistent with the rhetoric Sanders campaigned on except for the one banning Latinx, a gender-neutral alternative to Hispanic or Latino.
"That was nothing that I had seen from her until then. So, it felt surprising," Bonilla said.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

(23,029 posts)It's popular down South, as I understand, because it's cool and comfortable in the hot summer weather.
I actually don't mind that dress too much, except that I think it looks unprofessional. To me, it looks like something to go square dancing in, not to the office.
I hope she doesn't dress like that in official appearances as governor. She needs to dust off some of the suits she wore when she worked for Trump.

(4,044 posts)I think she can win this one. "Latinx" sounds awkward even when AOC says it.
On a separate issue ... tablecloth? ... prison mattress material? She wears it strangely well.

(115,044 posts)SHS. But Latinx has not really been adopted or accepted by Hispanic populations for the most part out West-- or at least the Southwest. In Colorado, Westword did a survey a few years ago and interviews among Hispanic leaders and found (somewhat to their surprise it appears) that they felt it to be a "created" term among "East Coasters" that was not at all acceptable to communities that they were dealing with. Of course, that could change--might have already as that assessment was from a few years ago, but...
I'm happy to use any term that the vast communities themselves prefer, but I have to wonder about this one too. When activists thrust terminology on very broad and diverse people from a multitude of countries and backgrounds, it can backfire. Given that "Hispanic" is gender-neutral, it might just be the middle ground.
That said, SHS is just "shit-stirring" as performative racism as far as I am concerned. So she should be called out for that, regardless.
Earth-shine
(4,044 posts)That's how I feel about it.
It's a term invented by linguists, not one that organically came from the communities.

(33,643 posts)has a 'gendered' quality (ending in 'o' versus 'a') to it.
ShazzieB
(23,029 posts)Adjectives are also gendered to agree with the noun they modify. French is the same way, as are (afaik) all the other "Romance" languages.
German has THREE genders (masculine, feminine, and neuter). Gender is deeply embedded in many, many European languages. (I don't know about the rest of the world, because I haven't studied any non-European languages.)
I can see why some native speakers of a language like Spanish might object to "outsiders" tampering with their language in a way that actually violates the language's internal rules. I don't think I'd care for it, either.

Many Latinos know they're 50% native American, but they really don't care enough to abandon their Spanish roots. So, that's why it won't catch on.
Hubby still cringes at Chicano. "I'm not Chicano, that's something else". Chicanos are activists. LatinX is also an activist group.

(104,484 posts)I have to present a disclaimer first; I am no fashion aficionado but I can manage acceptable attire when I leave my house and am in no way one to judge another's attire BUT...
Either she just got yanked from an Annie Oakley costume party or she is dressed resembling what she wore at eight years old because that's when she had the dream of becoming governor so she's celebrating by wearing her eight year old's dress to celebrate her childhood dream come true?
GB_RN
(3,593 posts)But, having said that, its my understanding from several news reports, including one on NPR, that most people of Hispanic origin have no idea WTF Latinx means; its a white-mans construct. For Hispanics from Mexico, etc., they are either Latin(os), if male, or Latina(s), if female and mixed-sex groups are generally referred to simply as Latinos. Theres no gender-neutral noun in Spanish.
Its also my understanding that most Latinos dont like the term Latinx once they have it explained to them. Personally, I think the term is dumb, and over the top with the PC stuff. And when it turns off the people you want on your side, its time to stop doing/using it.
Lucky Luciano
(11,875 posts)However you know THAT is not why she's doing it. It's because it's gender-neutral and that makes wingnuts think of trans and non-binary people.
