Gina Lollobrigida, Film Beauty Who Charmed Hollywood, Dies at 95

Source: Bloomberg via MSN

(Bloomberg) -- Gina Lollobrigida, the Italian-born film star who was among Hollywood’s most sought-after female actresses in the 1950s and ’60s and was frequently described as one of the world’s most beautiful women, has died. She was 95.

She died in Rome after a long illness, Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera reported.

The daughter of a furniture manufacturer shared the screen with leading men such as Humphrey Bogart, Rock Hudson, Burt Lancaster, Frank Sinatra and Anthony Quinn. She carved out a movie career that landed her on the cover of Time Magazine in 1954 and earned a Golden Globe award in 1961 for the romantic comedy “Come September.” The men in her personal life were no less illustrious, including billionaire Howard Hughes and heart-transplant pioneer Christiaan Barnard.

I can honestly say I don't think I've ever seen any of her work, but I recognized the name immediately.

Gina Lollo Jupiter. When The Jetsons did the Gina Lollo Jupiter send up, I had heard of Lollobrigida but didn’t realize just what a stunning woman she was. Years later, I saw the movie “Trapeze” with Tony Curtis and Burt Lancaster and realized what all the fuss was about.

Her name was unique enough to be parodied in a bunch of cartoons.

Saw that in GD.

She used to be in the entertainment news ALL the time and I haven't heard her name mentioned in years. Didn't even know she was still around.

I know there were several Italian "beauties" including Sophia Loren (who was younger and who was a bit of a competitor) who overlapped with Gina at the time. And they were also running alongside other actresses including Lauren Bacall, Elizabeth Taylor, and Ingrid Bergman, all who played parts with those same "leading men".

R.I.P.

that really started to amplify that "larger than life" thing - particularly with the "next generation" after this group - the Raquel Welches and George Hamiltons and Claudia Cardinales and Charros. They were often showing up as "guest stars" on TV series while still dong films.

It was a way to keep their brand alive, though they started to become more life-size and real over time. The magic started to wear off with the small screen.

I imagine if they were "hip" enough (old term) they would keep it going on Instagram, which is where the current "Hollywood crowd" hangs out now.

the 1980s, for Best Supporting actress, and you might have seen her on that.

And no, I didn't watch that prime-time soap or any of the other prime-time soaps including Dallas. I think I looked at a couple of episodes only because I'd met writer-producer Ernie Wallengren online then (nice guy, tried to help me locate a NY friend who'd worked for Filmways East in the '70s), and Falcon Crest was one of the hits he'd worked on. I've already mentioned Ernie here, in the OP at https://www.democraticunderground.com/10181674319 since that thread was asking for prayers for someone with ALS, and Ernie is the only person I knew who developed ALS and had allowed his battle with the disease to be filmed. Ernie was in his 30s when I knew him, only 50 when he died in 2003. He was only 31 when Gina first appeared on Falcon Crest; she'd become a star with a film released the year after he was born, but she was still gorgeous then, in the mid-1980s.

I found YouTube video of her on Falcon Crest. Ernie's name is shown briefly at 1:35.

Beat The Devil (1953), starring Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones, Gina Lollobrigida, Peter Lorre, Robert Morley, and Edward Underdown. That's a lot of acting talent. And it's directed by John Huston.

This is an unusual movie that includes humor, drama, action, and a surprise ending.

Lollobrigida really displays her talent in a humorous scene in which she pretends to be in love with the character played by Underdown.

… possibly Dick Cavett, and just remember being impressed by her intelligence and range of interests.

Never followed her career myself, but back in the day I certainly knew men and boys who thought she was the sexiest, most gorgeous woman ever.

RIP Gina Lollobrigida, and thanks for all your work.
