McCarthy says Santos will be seated on committees

Source: The Hill

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Tuesday said Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.) will be seated on committees, after the embattled freshman lawmaker admitted to embellishing parts of his resume.

“He’ll get seated on committees,” McCarthy said in the Capitol when asked if he would be assigned to any panels.

The comments come after McCarthy last week said Santos should not be on any top House committees — including Appropriations, Ways and Means, Financial Services and Energy and Commerce — but left the door open to seating him on other panels.

Santos has been at the center of a controversy on Capitol Hill following revelations that he fabricated portions of his resume and biography. The freshman congressman admitted to embellishing some details but has said he has no plans to step down from Congress despite several calls for his resignation — including some from within the GOP.

Here is an article about it -

When it comes to security clearances, rules for others don’t apply to Congress

By John M. Donnelly
Posted January 12, 2021 at 3:55pm

Lawmakers are privy to some of the country’s most sensitive information, from domestic terrorism threats to military operations overseas, regularly receiving briefings in secure rooms in the Capitol complex from federal and military officials with high-level clearances.

But in the wake of the Jan. 6 riots at the Capitol, some are asking whether certain members of Congress, including Republican leaders of defense and intelligence panels, would meet even the minimum standards for a government official to hold a security clearance. “Being cleared requires allegiance to the U.S. Government and Constitution of the United States at a bare minimum,” Rep. Ruben Gallego, an Arizona Democrat who serves on the House Armed Services Committee and who fought with the Marine Corps in Iraq, said in a statement to CQ Roll Call.

Unlike officials at federal agencies, lawmakers do not have security clearances per se, experts said. Rather, members of Congress are by tradition deemed inherently trustworthy by dint of the offices they hold, although they are subject to punishment under the House ethics code for revealing classified information. The maximum penalty, which would require a two-thirds vote by the House, is expulsion.

Neither their fellow lawmakers nor any president could take that fundamental presumption of trustworthiness away from them. “If they remain Members, then they retain eligibility for access to classified information,” Steven Aftergood, a leading expert on government secrecy with the Federation of American Scientists, said in an email. “But if they engaged in constitutionally prohibited actions, then they should be expelled from Congress altogether.”

a slight exaggeration of someone's credentials, like saying "I graduated with a 3.8 GPA", when you actually graduated with a 3.6 GPA.

Saying you went to a college you never attended, graduated with a 3.8 GPA from the college you never attended, was on the championship volleyball team from the college you never attended, and had two imaginary knee replacements because of it, is a shit-ton more than an "embellishment"! It's a stream of bold faced lies!

WASHINGTON — House Republicans awarded embattled Rep. George Santos, R-N.Y., seats on two House committees Tuesday, even as he faces federal, state and local investigations and fellow Republicans demand that he resign.

The GOP Steering Committee, which is led by Speaker Kevin McCarthy of California and doles out committee assignments, voted to give Santos slots on the Science, Space and Technology Committee and the Small Business Committee, which are two of the lower-profile panels on Capitol Hill.

Small Business Committee Chairman Roger Williams, R-Texas, confirmed Santos’ appointment to his panel. Two GOP sources said Santos would also serve on the Science committee.

"I don't agree with what [Santos] said, did and all. I don't agree with any of that, OK? It's wrong," Williams said in a phone interview Tuesday. "But at the same time, he's on the committee. We're gonna have rules to follow. He does represent about a million people in New York and a lot of Main Street issues."
