James McGrew, 40, of Biloxi, Mississippi and Carlsbad, California, also was ordered by U.S. District Court Judge Beryl A. Howell to serve 36 months of supervised release and pay a $5,000 fine and $2,000 in restitution. McGrew pleaded guilty last May 13 to felony assault.
McGrew was on parole for a past crime when he participated in the riot, according to court records, as Raw Story reported in October. He was convicted of shoplifting in 2011 and 2013 and vehicle theft in 2016.
McGrew was identified by the FBI with the help of video that showed him lifting his T-shirt to wipe his eyes during the riot. It revealed a massive tattoo with the lettering King James across his stomach, according to the FBI.
On January 6, McGrew was among the early wave of rioters, entering the Capitol at 2:45, the DOJ reported. At approximately 3:05 p.m., he pushed one officer and struck another officer who was standing before him. Two minutes later, another officer used his baton to push McGrew and others closer to the exit. McGrew struck the officer and lunged for the officers baton. He then engaged in an altercation with yet another officer.......................................

James Burton McGrew is seen inside the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, captured by police body-worn cameras (images via FBI court filing)
A California man who joined the violent mob at the U.S. Capitol while on parole for another offense and then traveled to Mexico days before his arrest for offenses committed on Jan. 6 has pleaded guilty to a felony.
. . .
Four more years! he was heard yelling. He was also heard shouting: Lets go, we need more people, and we took this thing.
He entered the building at around 2:45 p.m. and made his way to the Capitol Rotunda, where he saw police officers trying to corral rioters toward the exit. After witnessing rioters fight with both Capitol Police and Metropolitan Police officers, McGrew yelled at the officers.
You leave! he admitted to shouting at them. This is our house!
Then, as officers tried to clear the Rotunda, McGrew grabbed a police officers baton, wresting it away from the officer briefly before returning it. He shouted to other people in the crowd to lock arms and form a line in order to resist the officers efforts to clear the building.
. . .
At around 4:00 p.m., McGrew arrived at the entrance to the tunnel at the Lower West Terrace. After watching other rioters physically assault officers who were defending the tunnel, McGrew grabbed a piece of a wooden handrail, lifted it over his head, and threw it at the police officers, striking either an officer or the officers shield.

(7,286 posts)not to mention the financial cost to charging and prosecuting, and the assault on an officer, even if the officer.
Frankly, these legal "consequences" seem rather thin to me and very disappointing.

(6,934 posts)Start prison time at 15 years and up from there. Then let House Republicans shoot it down on National TV.
These sentences are BS for the severity of the CRIME committed.

(10,779 posts)... but true. That mob could clearly see the armed men through the window they were breaking through, and Babbitt dared them to do their job of protecting those people still in the chamber.

Way too short a sentence. Good luck King James.

(10,095 posts)get reported. I suspect outlets like Fox never report these people or their jail sentences, so how do people who dont use mainstream media even know about this punishment for the insurrection? If they dont, theres not much of a deterrent at work here.

(12,622 posts)And then by extension, THOSE peoples friends. Plus the constant whining of the RW media & internet shows about what a travesty it all is probably gets to most of them

(129,608 posts)and I have seen these arrests reported "locally" if the person was from the area. Most don't make "national news" but a few who were more notoriously identified have (e.g., the cosplaying clown Jake Angeli who was dubbed the "Q Anon shaman" with the horns headdress... and recently, Richard Barnett, the guy who enjoyed himself in Pelosi's office with his feet up on the desk stealing her correspondence, as that trial is going on right now).

(18,483 posts)a crime and get caught , the tatto goes into a national data base. asli it is interesting that many of the prticipants have priors. i agree that the sentencing is rediculus. should be life for the damage they did to this country.

(16,541 posts)What a great idea!
Changing the subject: I suspect many, if not most, of the sentences everyone complains about as being too light are due to preexisting sentencing guidelines that (understandably) did not foresee anything like J6, rather than judges being too lenient. Let's cut the judges some slack here; they're probably doing the best they can. (I don't know if anyone here is actually blaming the judges; I'm just saying I don't think it's entirely their fault.)

(7,480 posts)Expect this to happen again in the relatively near future simply because these "consequences" don't amount to much of anything given the gravity of the situation. There's nothing to celebrate here, OP.
