For the last year, President Joe Biden has released a record amount of oil from America's petroleum reserves in order to increase oil supply and lower the price of gasoline that skyrocketed at the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) on Thursday proposed an amendment that would have prevented Biden from selling oil in the future to combat high gas prices.

In justifying the amendment, Greene argued that "we need to chart a path back to energy independence and ensure President Biden is not able to sell our critical oil supplies to China and other enemy nations," this is why she wants to "prevent Biden from claiming an emergency to further reduce our strategic oil supplies."

It seems that the vast majority of members of Congress -- including the vast majority of her Republican colleagues -- thought that this was a bad idea, as a vote on the amendment ended with just 14 votes in favor and a whopping 418 votes opposed.

I imagine that's true for most of us. Where is the oil stored? How is it transported to the refineries? What agency is in charge of maintaining it? All she knows is that that it has something to do with Biden doing something positive to help the average person, and she -- like many Repugs -- can't stand that.

Biden didn't just do something to help the average American, he was helping people all over the planet when oil prices were being bid up far beyond reason. That's how the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is supposed to work and it drives Republicans crazy, they think it should just sit there until we need it for another war of corporate convenience.

I can answer all your questions, but I get about half my income from the awl bidness. The only sop to my environmental conscience is that the company that delivers the dividends is also funding some acquaintances of mine doing heavy research into alternative energy.

ETA: I should point out that when prices spike, so do my dividends. When the SPR happened, it let the steam out of those. I supported the release completely, it had to be done. Republicans only saw dollars escaping their grabby hands.

We were never "energy independent" during Trump's presidency. We were a "net exporter" of oil products, which means that we exported more than we imported. This happened late in Trump's presidency ( and I think it continued through Biden's first year, but you'll never hear them say that)!
