Tyre Nichols' brutal beating by police shown on video

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Authorities released video footage Friday showing Tyre Nichols being beaten by five Memphis police officers who held the Black motorist down and repeatedly struck him with their fists, boots and batons as he screamed for his mother.

The video is filled with violent moments showing the officers, who are also Black, chasing and pummeling Nichols and leaving him on the pavement propped against a squad car as they fist-bump and celebrate their actions.

The footage emerged one day after the officers were charged with murder in Nichols’ death. The chilling images of another Black man dying at the hands of police renewed tough questions about how fatal encounters with law enforcement continue even after repeated calls for change.

Protesters gathered for mostly peaceful demonstrations in multiple cities, including Memphis, where several dozen demonstrators blocked the Interstate 55 bridge that carries traffic over the Mississippi River toward Arkansas. Semi-trucks were backed up for a distance. In Washington, dozens of protestors gathered in Lafayette Park, across the street from the White House and near Black Lives Matter Plaza.

5. The inhumanity on display in those videos is sickening.

It shouldn’t be shocking that anyone can be so sadistic and wantonly cruel after everything we’ve seen over the years but this one is particularly heinous. To have a guy in handcuffs and just tee off on him like that over and over is as cowardly and repulsive as it gets. These people beat a man to death for no real reason and laughed about it. Others stood there and watched and did nothing.

Just like cartels do. Just like Crips do. Just like mob heavies do.

…will be that these cops are only being prosecuted so strictly is because they’re Black. Therefore, apparently, it would be racial injustice to convict them for something for which white officers get off scot-free…

9. I did a little checking

to see how the media is showing the video footage. There is the body-cam footage and then also surveillance video available. A lot of the media outlets are only showing some of the footage. Fox of course is showing the initial stop body-cam footage and the least of the beating before Tyre breaks free running for his life. Then Fox shows them catching Tyre again and getting him on the ground. They pretty much end at that point. So be careful if you think you are seeing all of the video available because depending on the media network/program you might only be seeing part of the total video available. Of course ones like Fox are painting this to be a "he should have complied" scenario. That's my early take of seeing coverage. Maybe some have gotten better since their first takes but I doubt the GQP networks will. In fact if you just watched the early Fox reporting and showing of the video you would be hard pressed to figure out where the damage to Tyre occurred because Fox showed selective parts of all of the available video.
