MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) The Memphis police chief on Saturday disbanded the citys so-called Scorpion unit, citing a cloud of dishonor from newly released video that showed some of its officers beating Tyre Nichols to death after stopping the Black motorist.
Police Director Cerelyn CJ Davis acted a day after the harrowing video emerged, saying she listened to Nichols relatives, community leaders and uninvolved officers in making the decision. Her announcement came as the nation and the city struggled to come to grips with the violence of the officers, who are also Black. The video renewed doubts about why fatal encounters with law enforcement keep happening despite repeated calls for change.
Protestors marching though downtown Memphis cheered when they heard the unit had been dissolved. One protestor said over a bullhorn that the unit that killed Tyre has been permanently disbanded.
Referring to the heinous actions of a few that dishonored the unit, Davis reversed an earlier statement that she would keep the unit intact. She said it was imperative that the department take proactive steps in the healing process.

Referring to "the heinous actions of a few" that dishonored the unit, Davis said it was imperative that the department "take proactive steps in the healing process." "It is in the best interest of all to permanently deactivate the Scorpion unit," she said in a statement. She said the officers currently assigned to the unit agreed "unreservedly" with the step.
The unit is composed of three teams of about 30 officers who target violent offenders in areas beset by high crime. It had been inactive since Nichols' Jan. 7 arrest. Scorpion stands for Street Crimes Operations to Restore Peace in our Neighborhoods.

In an interview Friday with The Associated Press, Davis said she would not shut down a unit if a few officers commit "some egregious act" and because she needs that unit to continue to work. "The whole idea that the Scorpion unit is a bad unit, I just have a problem with that," Davis said.
The disbanding was announced as the nation and the city struggled to come to grips with video showing police pummeling the Black motorist. The footage released Friday left many unanswered questions about the traffic stop involving Nichols and about other law enforcement officers who stood by as he lay motionless on the pavement.

The five disgraced former Memphis Police Department officers, who are also Black, have been fired and charged with murder and other crimes in Nichols' death three days after the arrest.
The recording shows police savagely beating Nichols, a 29-year-old FedEx worker, for three minutes while screaming profanities at him in an assault that the Nichols family legal team has likened to the infamous 1991 police beating of Los Angeles motorist Rodney King. Nichols calls out for his mother before his limp body is propped against a squad car and the officers exchange fist-bumps. The five officers -- Tadarrius Bean, Demetrius Haley, Desmond Mills Jr., Emmitt Martin III and Justin Smith -- face up to 60 years in prison if convicted of second-degree murder.

(24,630 posts)Police Director Davis seems to be trying to respond to the family and community. Firing the five officers was the first step and this is a good second step. I don't know enough about her to know if she ignored some problems in the past, but she seems to be honest and empathetic now.

(1,959 posts)because it was caught, and on video. There are probably 100s of these nazi squads across the nation.

(43,420 posts)They acted like a Goon Squad. It's not like they don't know about these issues since they're happening everywhere else in recent years. So who's in command? At HQ, and on the scene? We need phone pole video everywhere.

(53,947 posts)there was no sergeant/supervising officer in charge of those goons. Things accelerated fast instead of de-escalating.
De-escalation has to be the watch word drilled in the heads of cop recruits endlessly. And to veteran cops on the job.

(1,836 posts)Shes very attached to these special teams as a primary street level resource- she clearly believes they are worth the risk and I think itll be back again with a new name in the future if she remains in charge. Maybe next time itll be JACKELS or FRENZIED SHARKS. Who knows.

(14,176 posts)At least 10 people were involved in this case, which to my mind is more than "a few." And, as much as we can appreciate her swift actions in firing the cops and getting the footage out, if she has an attitude that just a few people are the problem, she'll never resolve this because it seems pretty clear that this is a departmental (or occupational) cultural issue. You'll never convince me that was the first time they gave a severe beating to a suspect who didn't deserve one--they relished it too much and were too good at it.

I bet they did. So that they cannot be connected with the unit as more and more information comes out about this police goon squad.

(28,513 posts)WTF is this?
The article suggests that because the officers are Black, racism isnt a part of policing. But cmon. Police are only held accountable when theyre Black.

(129,794 posts)and I would add "or Brown" because the same happens with Hispanic officers. The "law" is suddenly followed and "discipline" is immediately meted out. White cops? Often lots of delays and FOP intervention and purported "investigations". The case of the cops who killed George Floyd was an aberration only because of the witnesses and so much of it that was filmed, and spread over the internet.

(16,296 posts)That is an identifying expectation of their own-self-perceived group - Like those called "Hell's Angels" or "Death Mafia" - they join because of what they see the group doing. Maybe OK for the military, but not civilian groups.

(129,794 posts)For starters, the misreading of the 2nd Amendment.
And second, being probably the most heterogeneous country in the world, the concept of "E Pluribus Unum" is riddled with some of the "Pluribus" people wanting to be "at the top" of a privilege pyramid at the expense of others (and enforcing it - even with indoctrination).
