Biden, McCarthy to discuss debt limit in talks on Wednesday
Source: Associated Press
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said Sunday he is looking forward to discussing with President Joe Biden a reasonable and responsible way that we can lift the debt ceiling when the two meet Wednesday for their first sit-down at the White House since McCarthy was elected to the post.
McCarthy, R-Calif., said he wants to address spending cuts along with raising the debt limit, even though the White House has ruled out linking those two issues together as the government tries to avoid a potentially devastating financial default.
The speaker pledged that cuts to Social Security and Medicare would be off the table.
I know the president said he didnt want to have any discussion (on cuts), but I think its very important that our whole government is designed to find compromise, McCarthy told CBS' Face the Nation. I want to sit down together, work out an agreement that we can move forward to put us on a path to balance and at the same time not put any of our debt in jeopardy at the same time.

The only reasonable and responsible thing for republicans to do is voluntarily go to jail. If you love America, thats exactly what you would do.

(21,947 posts)It implies that the President and McCarthy are negotiating over the debt limit. But all the quotes by McCarthy are aspirational theyre about how he wants to discuss the debt limit with Biden.
Meanwhile the quote from the White House is: "The President will ask Speaker McCarthy if he intends to meet his Constitutional obligation to prevent a national default, as every other House and Senate leader in U.S. history has done
He will underscore that the economic security of all Americans cannot be held hostage to force unpopular cuts on working families.

(37,046 posts)Kev has conservative values so everything will be alright. He represents patriots who only think they know what is best for them. Wait a minute. Im starting to observe the nefariousness of it all. Republicans want to destroy anything for no apparent reason. With a little work they could get that on a bumper sticker.

(391 posts)He said he doesn't see a need to do anything he'll let McCarthy handle it for now and then he said they will not cut SS or Medicare. Basically he's saying, "You created the mess you've got in the house you deal with it." At some point as long as the dems don't give in there will be some very uncomfortable calls coming from the money people to McCarthy telling him he needs to make a choice; either they pull their donations or he accepts that the crazy crew will go after him after he gives in.

(37,046 posts)So Kev you have two choices. You are either a fucking whore or you are a run of the mill whore. But you can always fall back on the fact that you have conservative values. Conservative Nirvana. Am I a Whore or am I whore? Maybe the title of kevs new tell all about Me The Speaker.

(7,402 posts)That implies to me that you need to also look at revenue in order for there to be balance. What revenue would he be putting on the table? I certainly hope not his sick 30% sales tax. Or was he just being loose with the tongue?

(23,216 posts)"reasonable and responsible way that we can lift the debt ceiling"--raise the debt ceiling and PAY THE F--KING BILLS we owe!! And then STFU about it!
Of course, if you really want to cut out government waste, we can cut the Speaker's pay to ZERO--how's that for cutting wasteful spending, Kev?

(15,740 posts)Congress is obliged to now pay for those items. Case closed.
If McCarthy is concerned about the budget deficit, now that he has a majority in the House he has the opportunity in the next submitted budget to slash all those programs that he deems wasteful and unnecessary.
Let's see him exercise some leadership and get consensus on those cuts. Heh.
