Man accused of kidnapping, torturing Oregon woman dies from self-inflicted gunshot wound
Source: CNN
A week after authorities discovered a woman bound and beaten in a southwest Oregon home, the kidnapping suspect has died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, a CNN affiliate reports.
Benjamin Obadiah Foster, 36, died in a hospital after an hours-long standoff with law enforcement Tuesday evening in Grants Pass, Oregon, CNN affiliate KTVL reported, citing a police spokesperson.

Too bad this predator, Benjamin Obadiah Foster, wasn't taken alive. He might have led investigators to other victims.

(3,017 posts)I also suspect a slowly rising tide of mental illness in the US. But what could be causing it, if you accept my premise? Chemical/mercury exposures, DNA malfunctions, vulnerable pregnancies, pollution? I can only hazard a guess. Maybe there has always been a lot of mentally ill people, but it was under-reported years ago.
Two researchers authored "Demonic Males", comparing the homicidal tendencies of male chimpanzees and humans. I read the book some time ago and couldn't disagree with it. The book explains why men are more dangerous than females:

(13,538 posts)Why do they have so much lower rates of mentally ill people? I dont know. Is it the over medication of the US? Is it the rush to medicate every little issue we may have? Are any groups studying this?
But in this case I dont think he was mentally ill; he's just a BAD person. There are just some people who only care about themselves & aren't mentally ill. They're simply BAD people. Same with criminals. You can have two people commit a similar crime but one knows he made a mistake & is sorry about it. The other is just a bad person who needs to be put away

(3,017 posts)Why are there are less homicidal maniacs in the EU? They exist in the EU, of course, but I bet the per capita ratio is far smaller than the US.
This sadist in Oregon was void of empathy, feeling, compassion-- the qualities that make us human. Does that fall under the rubric of mental illness?
Years ago, two researchers concluded that the West has been experiencing a rise in mental illness:

I shall have to read this book one day.

(6,780 posts)Narcissism and psychopathy have been accepted as normal and fine in society.
Look at people that society has put on pedestals, both real and fictional.
The actions of "reality" TV shows where the worst of humanity is given fame because they stand out. (Agent Orange, etc)
Most break-out characters in shows tend to be the ones no one would ever invite into their homes (Sheldon Cooper for example).
Those with fame show off their narcissism as much as possible (I work in the business and see it alot)
To get ahead in our capitalist society, you need to step betray, step on, undercut, and eventually pony up to people that are scum.
In business, people like Musk and Bezos are given huge platforms and people know exactly what they are, but because VIPs can pretty much hurt and step on anyone they want, people think that behavior is acceptable.
We've become a very selfish, narcissistic society of sociopaths and it's no wonder more people are like this. But just classify all of it as mental illness, dope them up on everything society can, never look in mirrors, and rarely solve the actual problems.
When websites like secretbenefit and ashleymadison came around, it was the beginning of the end of society.
When women started selling their virginity for tuition payments (yes it happens), it was the beginning of the end.
When parents hide behind "don't tell me how to raise my kid" when they are doing a miserable job, it was the beginning of the end.
American society is sick, twisted, and happy with it. Each year, it gets worse. And it's because the worst of humanity usually gets rewarded.
This predator wasn't mentally ill. He was an asshole. Being an asshole is not a mental illness.

American society is sick, twisted, and happy with."
Sorry, too blanket a statement of American society. The worst is also hyped bc it sells. Laissez-faire Capitalism, hyper Capitalism gets/is deadly
We do need some adjustments...being taught more interdependecy. Maybe a little less "rugged individualism".
That "rugged individualism" is useful at times but too much may contain too much "machismo".
Have I experienced cruelty? Some. Have I read about cruelty. Oh, yeah, it's out there past, and present A lot of nastiness at times.
Still the myriad of kindnesses from family, friends, acquaintences, and strangers has outweighed the negatives .
As for women selling sex for college tuition -
maybe if more men, and some women saw women as equal, and thus given more, and a wider range of opportunities including equal pay more women wouldn't see that as the best/only choice. I'm not saying it can't be a choice, but it's really weighted because of less opportunities.
Finally there is the "nature vs nurture". Mental illness or asshatery?
Idk - I'd certainly like to see more serious, and nuanced research in that area!

(9,148 posts)I believe that the evolution of the male brain (yes, sweeping generalization) has not kept up with rapid changes in modern society. This has devastating affects in a country awash in weapons.
Males in general are steeped in a culture of entitlement, in part due to the very toxic dominant patriarchal religions, like Christianity (and Islam and other "faiths" in other part of the world). Males are raised to think they're special because they were born with a penis. I mean, come on, the major mythology pushes the idea that the omnipotent creator of the universe and his only child are (of course!) male. And a white penis? Fuggedaboudit! If you have a white penis, you won the entitlement lottery! When these males (who deep down are insecure and know they're undeserving of special treatment and therefore try to compensate) don't get the things they think they deserve (wealth, power, popularity, super models, whatever), they take it out on everybody else.
I and tens of millions of women and non-toxic males are beyond exhausted and sickened by the entire spectacle.

(3,017 posts)Years ago, my mother told me "to make it in America, you have to be very, very good-- or very, very bad."
For the good, she was relating to musicians (e.g., Yo-Yo Ma, Glenn Gould) or athletes (e.g. Derek Jeter or Arthur Ashe), but for the bad she probably meant the individuals you described.
Who is responsible for this unspeakable predator who hurt that poor woman (and how many others)?
And if you sketch a swastika on his forehead, he may look like Charles Manson.
'Tis sad indeed to witness our country slowly flush itself down the toilet when other countries can "figure it out," so to speak.
Thanks for the perspective.

And I noticed within the thread that Madison Cawthorn advised parents to raise their kids as "monsters"? How in the Wide World of Sports does the American people kick Madison (named after a mermaid) Cawthorn out of Congress, only to be replaced by George Santos?
