Hunter Biden asks for criminal probe into Trump allies for 'theft' of data from laptop

Lawyers for Hunter Biden sent letters Wednesday requesting investigations into allies of former President Donald Trump who they say trafficked in stolen information from his laptop — a dramatic shift in strategy for the president’s son after years of GOP attacks.

Among the letters, which were obtained by NBC News, was one sent Wednesday to the Justice Department's National Security Division asking for an investigation into "individuals for whom there is considerable reason to believe violated various federal laws in accessing, copying, manipulating, and/or disseminating Mr. Biden’s personal computer data," including Rudy Giuliani, who was Trump's lawyer at the time.

Hunter Biden lawyers wrote a similar letter to the Delaware attorney general's office, requesting a probe into the same people for allegedly violating "various Delaware laws" in accessing Biden's information from what Trump has called "the laptop from hell."

The Justice Department declined to comment. A spokesperson for the Delaware attorney's general did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Following a heated exchange with FBI’s Bryan Vorndran, assistant director of the FBI’s Cyber Division, during a hearing on Tuesday, Gaetz got the green light to enter a copy of the purported laptop hard drive into the congressional record.

"Anyone surprised that a day after FBI looks like they’re covering for the Biden Crime Family. ... we get the false flag DOJ authorized leaks to CNN that things are really 'heating up' in the hunter case?" Gaetz tweeted Wednesday. "We live in a world where tracking the patterns of their lies reveals truth."

"We are going to take the Hunter Biden Laptop, the most suppressed information in the world, and put it in the official record for everyone to see and make your own judgments," Gaetz tweeted after Tuesday's hearing.

The owner of a computer repair shop in Delaware, John Paul Mac Isaac, claimed that Hunter Biden's laptop was left at his shop in 2019 and that no one returned to retrieve it. A copy of the laptop's hard drive was shared with Rudy Giuliani, who distributed additional copies of it to conservative groups. Many Republicans, including Gaetz, cited contents that emerged from the device to criticize some of the Biden family's business dealings. ............

WASHINGTON – A computer security company reported Monday that Russian hackers sought access to the Ukraine gas company at the heart of the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump, and House Democrats warned the move threatened to interfere with the 2020 election.

Area 1 Security, a California company focused on email security, reported that members of Russian military intelligence known as the GRU launched a campaign in early November to steal email credentials from workers at Burisma Holdings.

The eight-page report does not say what information, if any, the GRU obtained or what it was looking for. The firm also did not speculate as to the GRU's motivations. But the target and timing of the apparent hacking, which happened in the middle of a presidential race and a House impeachment inquiry against Trump, quickly raised concerns among Democrats that Russia may be using similar hacking techniques to interfere in the 2020 presidential election.

Hunter Biden, the son of Democratic front-runner and former Vice President Joe Biden, served on Burisma’s board. Trump's July 2019 call with Ukraine, in which he urged the country's president to investigate the Bidens and Burisma, led to the House's impeachment inquiry. But Trump has said his goal was to fight corruption in Ukraine and he expects to be exonerated in the pending Senate trial.
