This 26-year old male just threw his life away over what? Hatred? Will this stupidity never cease? If this is his first offense, Nicolas Malindretos will probably get a 5-year sentence of probation and a fine. Good luck securing a livelihood for yourself.

CLIFTON Investigators found flammable items and a concerning map when they searched the home of a man charged with throwing a Molotov cocktail at a Bloomfield synagogue early Sunday morning, according to federal prosecutors.
Nicholas Malindretos, 26, appeared in Newark federal court on one count of attempted use of fire to damage and destroy a building used in interstate commerce on Thursday. A judge ordered him to remain in custody after prosecutors warned that he would "present a danger to the community."
The Clifton man is accused of walking up the driveway of Temple Ner Tamid around 3 a.m. Sunday, lighting a homemade firebomb and throwing it at the Jewish temple. Instead of setting the building on fire, the glass bottle broke against the front door leaving a small puddle of gasoline.
Authorities said a search of Malindretos's home turned up gasoline, wicks, and lighters. Investigators also found a map noting a "ten-mile radius of targets" including police and military targets.

(510 posts)The AUSA can now upgrade the charges to terrorism after seeing the target list and paraphernalia. Wow. If his family hasn't disowned him, they can visit him at nearby Fort Dix, FCI, after sentencing.

(7,805 posts)his failed attempt to firebomb a Jewish house of worship is no less heinous if he had succeeded...a slap on the wrist and a promise to be a good boy is not "a lesson learned"..

(510 posts)The magistrate didn't release him on his own recognizance. The AUSA will portray a campaign of violence in their prosecution. Defense counsel will want him to plead guilty to a lesser charge. We'll see how this plays out. Either way, this miscreant enjoyed his last free day for a long time this week. I hope he really enjoyed that cigar in his selfie.

(7,616 posts)Sure, there have always been a degree of antisemitism simmering along, (but low level like) among certain groups who are but few in number, however this hatred seems to have grown quite a bit in size and intensity during the last few years.
Jews have to be among the most innocuous people on the planet and comprise only a tiny fraction of the population both here and around the world. Besides that, they are hard to identify unlike say, people who are black or even brownish.
I don't get how this building could be "used in interstate commerce"?

(510 posts)That could be the reason for the initial charge. I am not certain. Perhaps an attorney in DU can explain it. Here's an excellent resource to look up US laws: https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/844
Either way, one more from the Basket of Deplorables into the Bureau of Prisons.

That I don't get. Unless my house is also "used in interstate commerce" since I just got something from out of state.
Heck, then it's used in international commerce, just got Le mage du Kremlin from a bookstore in Angleterre.

To think you could get away with this one?....This is as stupid as can be...(sorry for repeat)
...A long prison sentence will make him a bit smarter. But he hasn't got a clue....says Stu.
Oh, and the cigar is a no, no in prison. If this one smokes a cigar, it will be taken from him in prison.
........ What do you say, Mr. Stupid"?
