Companies pledge millions in fed effort to stem road deaths

Source: AP

By HOPE YEN today

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nearly 50 businesses and nonprofits — including rideshare companies Uber and Lyft, industrial giant 3M and automaker Honda — are pledging millions of dollars in initiatives to stem a crisis in road fatalities under a new federal effort announced Friday.

It’s part of the Department of Transportation’s “Call to Action” campaign, which urges commitments from the private sector, trade groups and health and safety organizations to reduce serious traffic injuries and deaths.

Traffic fatalities are near historic highs after a surge of dangerous driving during the coronavirus pandemic.

The public-private effort, unveiled Friday as part of the department’s multiyear strategy started last year to make roads safer, ranges from investments to improve school crosswalks to enhanced seat belt alerts in Uber vehicles and a partnership between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to promote proven injury prevention strategies, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg told The Associated Press.

not to fund the fascists after the insurrection…guess they forgot.
Corporate pledges not worth the stock buybacks they written on.

AP should mention that, as they sure played up the pledges then!

When there is corporate stroking to be done, AP is your guys!

Reducing speed limits, in town and on the hyways.
Put GPS in every car and have it linked to the speed that vehicle can go.
That will cut the need for enforcing the limits and the dangers involved with that.
Now the companies can redesign the front ends of their rolling walls to make tham safer for others on the roads.

But the Feds said they would withhold hiway funds. Bingo.
Same here.
For the most part ticket writing is a loss for States and cities.

It's much more important to stop and arrest a, usually specific "American" for no turn signal, expired plates, coasting through a stop sign, not stopping at a red light than having to try to pull over some yahoo in his or her very expensive car doing 90 on a freeway or 55 in a 35 mph zone. Too much effort! HAve to drive way out of their way THEN have to drive back to the billboard!

Besides, it's our entitled right - we can't drive, 55 and shoudn't have to.

And as a side note, I never realized so many of these questionable police were required to or dragged into or made to become police even though they knew ahead of time the dangers of becoming one!

and go back to the old "blue law" days when few businesses were open on Sundays. Cuts down on consumption and improves safety. Many people run to the stores 3 and 4 days a week when they could get what they needed/wanted by consolidating their trips. But of course we would get blockage from the MAGA crowd.

I do think that it would be funny to push an item on social media saying the Democrats and environmentalists are pushing to restrict shopping to only being allowed 24/7/365. You could count on the reaction from the MAGATS as they would scream about their "freedom" etc. Tsar Tucker, The Five etc. would immediately run segments blasting the limits.
