Agroup of U.N. experts said Monday they were alarmed by China's years-long policy of "forced assimilation," which has sent nearly 1 million Tibetan minority children to boarding schools for compulsory Han-Chinese education.
The Chinese government aims to acculturate the Tibetan people "culturally, religiously and linguistically" by placing children in a residential school system where they lack "substantive study" of their own language, history and culture, the three rights experts said.

the apologist would downplay this and point to USA for doing the same thing to Native Americans 100 years ago.

(23,001 posts)Is never right. The same problem I've always had with, "missionaries,"--your religion is wrong, ours is right. You must be assimilated.

Same for Xianity.
The Tepa are gone. Probably assimilated by Apaches, or forced out of their lands and assimilated elsewhere. Or killed.
The French did it in the 1800s. All the regional variants of French were pretty much killed off, even in pais d'oc and Bretagne.
Bantu languages wiped out the previous languages as they spread from Cameroon or thereabouts.
As for the process--it's a natural process. It's what happens.
As for religion proselytizing--or any other kind of cultural shift--if it's voluntary, that's fine. People may experience social pressure, but it's peer-to-peer and not top-down. But if it's required then it's liberty denied, even if a democratic majority want it (because liberty matters, and democracy is the best means to ensuring it, but when it's a mob its detrimental to the goal). And it's liberty denied whether you're forcing a population to accept new cultural norms for jobs or trade or courts or schools.

(13,152 posts)We used to do a LOT of things that are no longer looked at as "normal". As most countries did. But MOST countries eventually realized things like this were wrong; moved ahead & became MORE civilized.
Others chose to stay in the 19th century. Or worse. Like China.
