Walmart to close some 'underperforming' stores in 3 states
Source: The Hill
Nearly half a dozen Walmart locations are set to close in the coming weeks, just two months after the retail chains CEO warned stores could close amid an uptick in shoplifting.
A Walmart in southeast Albuquerque, New Mexico, is set to close within a month, a company spokesperson confirmed to Nexstars KRQE. The company described the store as underperforming but noted that several factors contribute to the decision to close a location.
Walmart is also preparing to close a store in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, according to local reporting, and three stores in the Chicago area. Nexstars WGN reports two of the stores in Chicago did not meet financial expectations.
In December, CEO Doug McMillon warned Walmart could close stores and raise prices due to historically high rates of theft at stores.

(51,267 posts)I'll stand in line for the one human cashier instead of the aggravation of the machines screwing up, not scanning properly, not taring my reusable bag's weight, etc. A human has to come by and fix it anyway.

(15,425 posts)cost jobs. Lately, I've been doing the curbside thing, and it is much less stressful than going into the store, fighting the crowds, and then waiting in line.

(76,703 posts)The scanner never picks up the code & I have to manually put in the code & the quantity.
I rarely buy produce there. I buy that locally. Much easier.

(40,365 posts)Then there'd be no one to check you out, since they basically refuse to pay for anyone to staff the checkout lanes. I remember one time before self-checkout came along, my ex-wife and I went to the local WM to get one thing and they had ONE lane open out of all twenty-some. The checkout line literally stretched to the back of the store.
F**k Walmart.

(55,136 posts)The shelf price at one of my local Walmarts are months outdated here and there. Shelf price is 99 cents, rings in at $1.32. They removed all their price scanners months ago. I don't have confidence in their price accuracy so I buy some items elsewhere.

(21,497 posts)they could do like Costco and count the items in your cart vis-a-vis your receipt. There are ways to keep the stores open and cut down on theft.

(33,424 posts)And go thru all the bags counting everything? People would scream to high heaven. Plus the enormous amount of time. Better to shut down where theft is prevalent and move to areas where they pay for things.

(3,719 posts)Yes I am bias and think of Walmart as the Faux Newz of retail but raising prices because of theft is BS in my mind. Walmart has one of the most advanced RFID inventory and tracking systems in the world. They can literally track their products from factory floor anywhere in the world to out the door in any store. I call BS on these evil bastards, and they are evil.

(3,616 posts)The theft claim is bullshit. Most of the time you are practically frisked while trying to leave with your purchase even after they have watched you check out and after showing your receipt. Not to mention the cameras that are placed in practically every isle.
How come other retailers are not closing stores over this "problem"?
Blame the customers for the store's poor performance. How Republican of them.

I haven't been to a Walmart in 15 years, so I'm not sure how they are set up.

(28,471 posts)performing stores when its actually due to mismanagment at the corporate level.
Take Kmart for example as there was no legitmate reason it could not have competed with Walmart had there not been a clear amount of mismanagement at the corporate level.

(4,043 posts)Walmarts SOP is to get a complete tax abatement to build a store for 20-30 years. Then when that is running out, they threaten to close it from pick your reason...
Underperforming
Too expensive to renovate
Not energy efficient enough...
Either they get the abatement renewed. Or they move to a neighboring town or suburb.

(1,527 posts)We have two Walmart stores here in Lakeland. There is supposed to be a thing where it alerts someone if something was not paid and they check your bags/receipt to make sure. I have been to both ones, and I have to say, at least over the last year, I don't think I have ever heard it go off. The only time they asked me to check my bag/receipt was when I had a 12 pack of Equate (Walmart's version of Premier Protein) protein shakes in my backpack. Other than that, they are pretty lax, maybe too much for their own good. They have expanded self-checkout a lot in the last couple of years. I try not to do self checkout unless there are no more than 12 items at the absolute most, but usually no more than 8-10 items.

(11,704 posts)A small start, but still. I'd love to see every fucking walmart in the world close. It might be slightly less convenient to the shopper, but in the long run, infinitely better for society to go to a locally owned grocer, hardware store, pharmacy, bakery, butcher, dairy etc.

(19,382 posts)The good thing about Walmart is you save the world by having everything you need in one building. Your idea is nice but the added burden on our world would be a disaster.

(11,704 posts)The world was fine before Walmart. Better, in fact.. Also before Big Banks, Big Insurance, Big Oil, Big Pharma and every other industry that has consolidated into a handful of dominant oligopolies and monopolies.
Changing logos on the delivery trucks would hardly be disastrous, nor would a few extra stops (or just a stop at a different place) be disastrous.

(7,790 posts)In some of these small towns, they've completely run out the Mom and Pop stores. I know I try hard to shop at the smaller stores to support the locals, but when you have 2 grocery stores and nothing to compete against Walmart, you're between a rock and hard place if you need something quick... or even not so quick.
I've done more and more of my (non grocery) shopping online. I detest Walmart. Can't stand screaming babies, and you never know who's carrying guns in the store anymore. In addition to that, since KMart went out of business, Walmart has been stocking less and less of what I used to go into the store for. You go through their grocery aisles, and you might think you were in Russia.
Kmart was not so hot, but at least the employees were nice and helpful, and the prices actually beat Walmart. I do believe it's Romney and company you can thank for running Kmart and Sears out of business. They decided to run it into the ground via Hedge Fund tactics. I hated that. Only place I could get the slacks that were so comfortable I basically lived in them. And many of the employees actually recognized my mother and made her feel welcome. At her age, that warmed my heart.
You can't get anything like that at Walmart. The employees are as p*ssed at being in the store as the shoppers are!
As a matter of principle, I will not do the self-checkout. I am so adamant about it, my husband won't even shop with me in the store at the same time. He likes it and uses it all the time. I've tried to tell him why I'm against it, to no avail. Asked him one time when he was finished (I was waiting for him outside), how many checkers did he put out on the street early today. Also, if they want me to "work" in the store by checking out my own stuff, they can give me a discount of the minimum wage per time it takes me to completely check out (including having a clerk come over and straighten out the cash register). Plus a discount on top of that for the aggravation. If they want to treat me like an employee by having me check out my stuff, I figure they can pay me for that privilege. Lord knows, their prices aren't decreasing any... especially not when they're the only store in town.
