Russia is draining a massive Ukrainian reservoir, endangering a nuclear plant
Source: NPR
Russia appears to be draining an enormous reservoir in Ukraine, imperiling drinking water, agricultural production and safety at Europe's largest nuclear plant, according to satellite data obtained by NPR.
Since early November 2022, water has been gushing out of the Kakhovka Reservoir, in Southern Ukraine, through sluice gates at a critical hydroelectric power plant controlled by Russian forces. As a result, satellite data shows that the water level at the reservoir has plummeted to its lowest point in three decades. Separate images provided by the commercial companies Planet and Maxar show water pouring through the gates, and shoreline along the giant reservoir emerging as a result of the rapidly falling water levels.
At stake is drinking water for hundreds of thousands of residents, irrigation for nearly half-a-million acres of farmland, and the cooling system at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Late last week, the International Atomic Energy Agency said it was aware of the potential risk posed by dropping water levels at the reservoir.

After holding a sham referendum and declaring Zaporizhzhia a Russian state, Russia now seems to want to irradiate the whole region. Utter madness.

(60,393 posts)No need to toss an atomic bomb on them. Just cause another Chernobyl AND contaminate their drinking water supply. It sounds like someone is no very concerned about being brought before a war crimes tribunal.
Too bad, although he won't be able to travel much if convicted in absentia. Even if he claims diplomatic immunity, someone will imitate Danny Glover at the end of Lethal Weapon II, and say, "just been revoked."

Putin will not be able to visit his double jointed mistress and their daughter, nor will he be able to visit his stolen money, which will hurt even more. If he tries to access his ill gotten gains, there will be little way to get it into Russia in a form he'd appreciate.
Right now he's a cornered rat. He knows his life is over if Crimea falls, even if he's managed to cling to Luhansk and Donetsk. Of course he's willing to irradiate Zaporizhzha and Rostov to the east, Rostov is expendable, the only self governing province in Russia.
The only people unsurprised by any of this are the Ukrainians, they know Russia all too well.

(82,157 posts)Psychopaths are good at manipulating people.
Telling people what they want to hear.
And people like and admire sociopaths.
They like that these people get away with so much.
Don't go to jail, don't pay taxes.
People think they are smart and successful because of their ability to work around the system.
Psychopaths are also good at intimidating and scaring people into compliance.
But yes we humans give a lot of power to the bad guys.
It is not until there is a huge path of destruction that people wake up.

(3,470 posts)Telling people what they want to hear. The local yokel believes a certain way. He or she watches Focksnooze and hears them say whatever he or she believes. They get reinforcement because they heard it on the TV. Them TV people know what I'm talkin' 'bout! I'm watchin' them from now on!
Talk about a circle jerk!

I don't often wish death on anyone, and I don't do it lightly, but taking out Putin could save untold thousands of lives.

(21,813 posts)witness to the insanity. Just tragic. I can't watch much footage of the earthquake either. I do hope jets are quickly given to Ukraine. They have suffered and need to have more to combat the evil that is Putin. Hang in there. What choice do we have after all?

(21,813 posts)any other way. There is no peace from blatant, relentless, nationalistic aggression. Unless they can take Putin out. Then there might be a chance to stop the madness.

(9,511 posts)Time to drop the dont attack Russia directly policy.
If they are doing this it is time to attack Russian power facilities, let the Russian people feel the pain Ukrainians have been feeling with no shelter, food, water and power etc.
After almost a year, Russia has not been hurt enough. Jesus; we havent done a third of what we should be doing to crush Russias nuts.
