WHILE CLAIMING JEWISH HERITAGE, ANNA PAULINA LUNA FORGOT TO MENTION HER NAZI GRANDFATHER
Source: Vanity Fair and Washington Post
Is Anna Paulina Luna the new George Santos?
Since it first came out last December that newly elected lawmaker George Santos had lied about roughly 99% of his biography, fresh falsehoods and cons involving the New York congressman have emerged on a near-daily, sometimes hourly basis. Given the pace with which these revelations have unfolded, and the sheer volume of lies, it seems unlikely at this time that any of Santoss Republican colleagues will be able to outdo him when it comes to apparently never telling the truth about anything. But at least one is trying!
We speak, of course, of Representative Anna Paulina Luna, who was the subject of a Washington Post exposé that suggested the 33-year-old Florida lawmaker has played it fast and loose with the facts concerning her background. For instance, claiming to both have Jewish heritage and to have been raised as a Jew, despite people familiar with the matter saying that was not the case.

She didn't choose her grandfather. And he claims he didn't choose to enlist in the Wehrmacht, which is likely since they had conscription back then. But she chose to be a "Jew-ish" Latina when she was raised Catholic.
Nazi heritage might ironically gain more votes in today's GOP than pretending to be Jewish or leaning heavily on her Latina half.
WaPo couldn't find any records of her father serving in prison, yet Fox News claims they have the records. This feels like an easy thing to verify.

(8,298 posts)Growing up her last name was
lMayerhofer. Her married surname is Gamberzky. She was using her married last name as late as 2017 during her internet, bikini model career stint.
Funny she did not embrace her mothers last name all those years. She also identified as white, non Hispanic before her foray into politics.

(7,026 posts)He and my uncle were both in the Wehrmacht and neither were Nazis. They were farmers who were conscripted and served in combat. Both were captured- my grandfather by the British in North Africa and my uncle by the Russians in Russia. I think it's a stretch to assume that Luna's grandfather was a Nazi simply because he was in the German army. That is akin to suggesting that my paternal grandfather who was in the US Navy during WWII was complicit in dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

(42,391 posts)... had no choice in the matter. It's also true that less than half of the Germans were members of the Nazi party. We should be careful about using broad strokes to paint all the Germans as racists, murderers, and "Jew-haters" when it was clearly a minority that did such things.

(18,629 posts)The claim of Jewish heritage may be a lie, and therefore relevant to her character. What her grandfather did is not, and there is no point in mentioning it. I daresay, other people with Nazis in their family tree have not broadcast the fact.

(12,785 posts)Looking at the picture, I notice that he is not SS but Wehrmacht. Regular army and from the lack of shoulder boards he is probably the lowest rank of private. None of this is proof one way or the other of him being a member of the NAZI party.
After the end of fighting in Europe my Dad volunteered to stay for a while. His duty was to supervise a group of former Wehrmacht Enlisted men in clearing rubble. He told me that the average German enlisted man was not really different from the average Ally enlisted solders. Mostly conscripts. Their choice was to wear the uniform and fight or be hung.
I am not giving Rep Luna a pass on her painting a back story she wants politically, but she is not in the same league as Santos.

Not only is Luna almost certainly not Jewish, but also according to several family members, reports the Washington Post, Luna's paternal grandfather Heinrich Mayerhofer, who died in 2003, served in the armed forces of Nazi Germany when he was a teenager in the 1940s.
"I was raised as a Messianic Jew by my father, Luna had told the Jewish Insider, clarifying that she identifies as a Christian. I am also a small fraction Ashkenazi."....
The Washington Post reported that Luna, who is now considered the first Mexican American woman to represent Florida in Congress, at one time described herself as Middle Eastern, Jewish or Eastern European.
There were also several other discrepancies in her account of her own heritage and upbringing, according to the Post, which allegedly resulted in the congresswoman representing herself as coming from more humble beginnings than she truly does.
Messianic Jews are by definition not members of the Jewish faith.
