(9,620 posts)That anything will happen at all. History says differently. Rich white men are rarely held accountable.
History says this issue will be buried and forgotten just like every other issue from trump university to rape to tax fraud, he just walks between the rain drops.

This has many differences.
Nixon resigned to avoid impeachment and was pardoned without the DoJ getting very involved in a political deal.
Trump isn't getting pardoned by Biden, New York, Michigan (investigation underway) or Georgia because Georgia cannot pardon similar to how Nixon got his pardon.
The DoJ, NY DA, GA DA and MI DA are all moving forward. A number of grand juries are looking over Trump's criminal behavior. They're continuing to look at a number of crimes - they allegedly added one this week
It looks like Thursday, we are going to get part of the grand jury report for GA. And it will outline the lying the Grand Jury felt took place. I do not imagine a happy Fani Willis like we just saw if the lying involved her team. Therefore, the lying must reflect on some of those trying to protect those being investigated and further substantiates the indictments Fani Willis said would be coming. Many have said Fani looks to have a very good case with that recorded phone call.
This is very different from anything Nixon experienced.
NY State and the DoJ on Jan 6th and the Mar-a-lago documents continue to subpoena and work their way up towards Trump.
No good lawyer guarantees anything in any given case. We have no guarantee Trump will be indicted nor if he's indicted that he'll be convicted. But what we are seeing is all these DAs and prosecutors continuing to gather evidence and build their case.
So it is way too early to spike the football and say nothing is going to happen - when so much is still happening.

(9,620 posts)Have you listened to Rachel Maddow's 'Ultra'? Actual Nazis blowing stuff up, overtly subverting the US government. Not only did almost no one go to jail, it was DOJ prosecutors, reporters and judges that ended up getting the worst of for daring to challenge them.
I know there has been a lot of investigations but nothing has come of them. I mean I can think of multiple high profile crimes, like George Floyd's murder, that had already gone to trial and over yet we are are still waiting for anything on Trump.
Given the history I have zero confidence anything will come of any of it. I hope I'm wrong but time will tell.

(10,421 posts)The circumstances today are different though some things might be in common.
It is possible nothing will come of it. But I think the chances of that are low.
Many criminal and civil cases are proceeding.
The Jan 6, NY financial crimes, GA & MI criminal cases all continue to gather more evidence and they've added some crimes along the way.
More folks underneath Trump are getting convicted - and some of those can be flipped.
For example, Allen Weisselberg thought he'd be out of Riker's within a few months but it appears they've caught him in a lie .. now potentially, he must testify against Trump or do some serious time.
Trump pleaded the 5th over 400 times. Trump org was convicted of tax fraud and other crimes and got fined $1.6 mil. He was fined $1 mil for a frivolous lawsuit and had to pony up $3 mil retainer for defense of classified docs. AG James is going after him for a minimum of $250 mil. That lawsuit can shutter his company and financially wipe out Trump - he doesn't have that much cash and his credit has been badly damaged by the revealing of his tax returns and the games he played over/under valuing his assets. Those he committed fraud against can sue him. He's had to pay a number of settlements in lawsuits already. EJ Carroll has two respectable claims against him. There are seven lawsuits against him for Jan 6th. His niece is still pursuing him for ripping off her estate. Both Carroll and Jan 6th civil claims have a much lower bar than the criminal courts to win their cases. Even if they don't get him behind bars, on top of all his legal bills, he's getting seriously hurt or wiped out financially.
I've been involved in a few civil cases. They were all pretty major events in my life.
Look at what Trump is going through:

He is in legal hell right now.
He can't get a Presidential pardon for NY, GA or MI criminal cases like Nixon did.
Now, the GOP is turning on him. The Kochs won't fund him. Club For Growth wouldn't invite him to their event. His campaign contributions have dwindled. Many GOP leaders are turning their backs on him.
He hasn't been indicted yet and they're kicking the heck out of him.
There is very little sign that this trend is slowing down. These cases are marching on getting more evidence and witnesses to nail this slippery weasel.

(10,421 posts)By design, a special grand jury cannot issue indictments, but it can make recommendations that could be relevant to a separate grand jury. McBurney said that the special grand jury fulfilled that mission.
Indeed, it provided the District Attorney with exactly what she requested: a roster of who should (or should not) be indicted, and for what, in relation to the conduct (and aftermath) of the 2020 general election in Georgia, the ruling states.
Previously in that article:
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D) had urged Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney to hold off on releasing the special grand jurys report, telling him at a hearing last month that decisions are imminent as to whom to indict. She said that she needs to protect the due-process rights of the accused.
We are at the precipice of indictments for what went on in Georgia after
"Trump made an infamous phone call urging Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger (R) to find 11,780 votes the precise margin needed to reverse President Joe Bidens victory there or potentially face criminal exposure."
Trump could very well find himself indicted shortly after this report is released. (I think via another Grand Jury which may already be underway)
