Gun rights, TikTok, China: George Santos says 'I'm not leaving.' Here's what he's cosponsoring
Source: USAToday
WASHINGTON – A lack of committee assignments, an ethics complaint, and calls for his ouster have not stopped George Santos from cosponsoring legislation. The New York Republican, facing mounting criticism and calls to resign from his GOP colleagues for fabricating his resume and lying about his background, has joined with his colleagues to cosponsor 16 bills so far this Congress. On Tuesday, Santos doubled down on his refusal to leave Congress: "Let me be very clear, I’m not leaving, I’m not hiding and I am NOT backing down," he wrote on Twitter. The measures include legislation that addresses U.S. relations with China, expanding gun rights, banning TikTok on college campuses, and minting coins for working dogs. Read more: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2023/02/14/george-santos-cosponsor-legislation-bills/11248833002/ There has to be a way for constituents to remove an awful person like this.

3. There is a way to remove him, but it's called an election. There's no recall procedure
for members of Congress so his constituents are stuck with him until the next regularly-scheduled election, unless the House votes to expel him - which seems very unlikely at this point.

6. He can be expelled from Congress if two-thirds vote against him
What are the chances that 289 Representatives would vote to expel him?
There are 212 Democrats so they'd need to convince 77 Repukes to vote him out. Does anyone really think it would happen? Also it wouldn't get to a vote unless McCarthy supported it, and we all know he won't. ![]() ![]() |

12. While Article I, Section 5
grants that "
![]() No Person shall be a Representative who shall not have attained to the Age of twenty five Years, and been seven Years a Citizen of the United States, and who shall, when elected, be an Inhabitant of that State in which he shall be chosen.
So as repugnant as Santos is, he meets all of these requirements so he had to be seated. Congress can remove him but that requires a 2/3 vote. This has only happened 5 times in the House and 15 times in the Senate (14 of which happened during the Civil War). Can his constituents recall him? No. The Constitution does not contain provisions for recalling House or Senate members. When combined with Article I, section 5, no legislation could be passed creating a recall path. Furthermore, this means that once a chucklehead is elected to the House or Senate, those constituents are stuck with him until the next election. Congress and the government must follow the rules as they are spelled out. If they don't, that opens up the door for all sorts of abuse to secure the power of one party over the other. |

14. This is true, especially when the house is split closely.
I still think there should be recourse for the constituents that voted for him to remove him for certain things, such as misrepresentation. But then that would apply to many I guess. Sigh.

19. My gut says that
a recall provision would have to be enshrined in the Constitution which would require an amendment.
Article I, Section 5 is very clear on the elections of Representatives and Senators so any law that attempted to circumvent this power would get shot down by the Courts with the commentary the power of granted by the Constitution could not be struck down by a law (and, more than likely, a state level law). |

17. They are in a trap of their own making
If they had a bigger majority they might actually vote to expel him so they could say "See we're not corrupt" but they can't do it because odds are any special election will go to the democrat after this. They could force him to resign of course and maybe offer him some backroom deal so he could avoid prosecution but again the special election would go against them so they can't do that either. All they can do is wring their hands and marginalize him and hope it blows over.

21. Santos (or whatever hus name is) has absolutely no shame.
I am not qualified to diagnose him (or anyone else), but he is showing many of the hallmarks of antisocial personality disorder.
People with antisocial personality disorder have no conscience and no sense of right or wrong. They care only about what THEY want and have no concern for how their actions affect anyne else. Santos' seeming lack of concern about the fact that EVERYONE now knows he has been lying and will continue to lie about absolutely EVERYTHING is consistent with his being a person who is incapable of feeling guilt or shame. Anyone else would be dying of embarrassment at having all his deceptions found out and knowing that most of the world sees him as a ginormous liar. The fact that he isn't makes me think that embarrassment is simply not part of his very limited emotional repertoire. |
