Source: ABC News

Actress and model Raquel Welch, known for her roles in the 1966 films "Fantastic Voyage" and "One Million Years B.C." has died, according to her representative. Welch was 82.

"The legendary bombshell actress of film, television and stage, passed away peacefully early this morning after a brief illness," Welch's rep said in a statement to KABC. "Her career spanned over 50 years starring in over 30 films and 50 television series and appearances. The Golden Globe winner, in more recent years, was involved in a very successful line of wigs."

"Raquel leaves behind her two children, son Damon Welch and her daughter, Tahnee Welch," her rep added.

Welch was born on Sept. 5, 1940, in Chicago, to Armando Carlos Tejeda, an aerospace engineer, and his Irish American wife, Josephine Sarah Hall. When she was 2 years old, she and her family moved to San Diego. Welch had a desire to perform at a young age. As a child, she took dance lessons and earned teen beauty titles including Miss La Jolla and Miss San Diego.

Sidenote, why are news reports still defining women only in relation to men? "Welch was born ... to Armando Carlos Tejeda, an aerospace engineer, and his Irish American wife, Josephine Sarah Hall."

Why not, "Welch was born to Josephine Sarah Hall [who, after all, was the one who literally GAVE BIRTH TO HER] and her husband, Armando Carlos Tejeda..."?

Makes me mad.

The easy answer is because the publications style guide dictates these kind of things. Not sure how often style guides are reviewed and revised. My guess is rarely.

Armando Tejeda certainly did NOT give birth to Raquel!

Very out of date style manual.

She was my favorite screen hottie back in the day. I had a poster of her in a fur bikini in One Million Years B.C. in my bedroom in junior high school, the only poster in my room. RIP, film goddess.

I was actually marveling at Welch’s, well, her figure. And I’m straight! But she had the best figure I’ve ever seen for a woman and that was without today’s hard workouts and toning.

I loved her in Fathom.

most of her life. She has always kept herself fit and worked hard. It was one of the ways she inspired so many women - yoga, cardio and regular weightlifting. I remember her workout routines in the 80s.

Very inspirational, particularly back in the day when women might have been discouraged from hard exercise.

Her diet was way too restrictive for me, but it certainly worked for her!

Broke a Hollywood (American) taboo when she had a rather tepid love scene with Jim Brown in the movie 100 Rifles.

Broke another with her role in Myra Breckinridge when she transitions to Myron.

early career and became known for her acting and humor as well as her beauty. Many of her roles have been noted in this thread, but there's a lesser-known role that I'll add to the list. She played Lilian Lust in one of my favorite movies, the Peter Cook and Dudley Moore Faustian comedy Bedazzled, in 1967. I'm sorry to know she has died at 82, which seems young to me now that I'm within a few years of age 70.
