UPS no longer delivers support to Boy Scouts of America

Source: kos

As Boy Scouts of America continues to double down on their "no gays allowed" policy, they are watching their corporate sponsorship base crumble.

Today the United Parcel Services (UPS) announced on their website:

"The UPS Foundation seeks to support organizations that are in alignment with our focus areas, guidelines, and non-discrimination policy. UPS and The UPS Foundation do not discriminate against any person or organization with regard to categories protected by applicable law, as well as other categories protected by UPS and The UPS Foundation in our own policies. These include, but are not limited to race, gender, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran or military status, pregnancy, age and religion."

LGBT rights org GLAAD has confirmed "organizations that conflict with UPS non-discrimination policy will not be considered eligible for funding" which means going forward Boy Scouts will be ineligible for grants from UPS through their "Focus on Giving" program. Intel Corporation made a similar decision earlier this year to not support groups whose non-discrimination policy is not inline with their own corporate policy. Intel's matching grants were at the time the single biggest source of revenue among programs of its kind for the Boy Scouts.

It is sure to make the fundies have a temper tantrum about religious freedom or something. I think that goes in the plus column. A day that fundies are having a temper tantrum is a good day for America.

Because I have always thought of the gay thing as being among consenting adults.

So it is OK for the Scouts to condone (or at least tacitly permit) child molestation, right?

I'm glad that UPS has a policy of non-discrimination in all those areas, including sexual orientation, and is now acting in line with their policy. But I wish they would have addressed the elephant in the room, pedophilia. That surely should be reason enough to not give any support to the Boy Scouts.

I keep hoping the Scout organization will change its stripes, but so far nothing.

Disappointing to this Eagle Bozo.

It is surely a small percentage -- just as it is in the Catholic Church.

The issue is what the organization does about it.

And in both organizations, they protected the perverts, which I take to be an endorsement of that activity and an invitation for others to partake.

From the article:

In many instances — more than a third, according to the Scouts' own count — police weren't told about the reports of abuse. And even when they were, sometimes local law enforcement still did nothing, seeking to protect the name of Scouting over their victims.

As my son was growing up, the Boy Scouts were allowed set up camp and recruit members from his elementary school. It was difficult to reason with my boy as to why he would not be joining their organization; in his eyes, I was denying him fun, fellowship, and a neat uniform. I believed that due to their discriminatory practices, they should not have been allowed to seek fresh meat at a public school. My arguments were met with wide-eyed disbelief by those in charge. Now, with a grown, balanced, and tolerant son, I am glad to see the change happening that was once a cry in the dark. Way to go UPS!

When I was growing up, I guess the SCOTUS had outlawed proselytizing in the public schools. So what the bastards did was wheel up a big bus once a week. The students were cajoled to go out the bus where we were force fed the King James Bible for an hour of the school day. But it was on a public street in front of the school, so it wasn't the school actually doing it.

And remember, there was no "under God" in our pledge of Allegiance, on our money or in the oath taken in court until about 60 years ago.

I wonder if anybody can pinpoint the day when it became mandatory for every presidential speech to end with "Oh yeah, I almost forgot,-- and God Bless the United States of America."

I used to work in scouting with my two sons but when they told me they wanted out I followed their lead...I like the skills they teach but their philosophy is too much to bear. Thanks for the post and THANKS UPS for standing up for what is truly morally straight!

But I am ecstatic over the election results from last week on both matters. Beyond addressing a significant civil rights issue in the case of gay marriage, this is the clearest possible sign that the country is stepping up to wrestle control away from the Christian Taliban.

So pot smokers, please don't mess this up. Smoke pot responsibly.

He is a Church of Christ preacher who is fired about every three years. Now he is a Boy Scout leader. Point is, you can try to "ban" gays all you like, but some gay people become Boy Scout leaders for obvious reasons. Back to my FIL. I disapprove of him because he wont admit his sexual orientation. You do not live as a guy man for years and then become "cured". We no longer talk because I tell him he should speak to others about overcoming being gay. I do not believe that is true, but it sure riles up his hypocritical ass.

Creating tomorrows haters today.

Since gays are shunned, I bet I would hear many juvenile 'homo' jokes around the campfire.

Boys will be boys, right?

That just makes them more likely to go that direction.

Same deal as the voter suppression attempts. Tell people they can't vote and hundreds of thousands of them will stand in line for hours just to prove you wrong.

Considering most young boys aren't "out" at that age, all this fixation on the "non gay lifestyle" just messes everyone up, straights and gays alike, sometimes for life.
