23 charged with terrorism in Atlanta 'Cop City' protest
Source: AP
ATLANTA (AP) More than 20 people from around the country faced domestic terrorism charges Monday after dozens in black masks attacked the site of a police training center under construction in a wooded area outside Atlanta where one protester was killed in January.
The site has become the flashpoint of ongoing conflict between authorities and left-leaning protesters who have been drawn together, joining forces to protest a variety of causes. Among them: People against the militarization of police; others who aim to protect the environment; and some who oppose corporations who they see as helping to fund the project through donations to a police foundation.
Flaming bottles and rocks were thrown at officers during a protest Sunday at Cop City, where 26-year-old environmental activist Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, or Tortuguita, was shot to death by officers during a raid at a protest camp in January. Police have said that Tortuguita attacked them, a version that other activists have questioned.
Almost all of the 23 people arrested are from states across the U.S., while one is from Canada and another from France, police said Monday.

(9,423 posts)Felony state domestic terrorism charges have been filed against 23 protesters arrested in Atlanta on Sunday after allegedly hurling bricks, rocks, fireworks and Molotov cocktails at police officers near the site of a planned public safety training facility, police said.
After attending a music festival near the site of the soon-to-be Atlanta Public Safety Training Center, a group of people changed into black clothing and entered the construction area at around 5:30 p.m. ET. The "agitators" approached officers there and launched a "coordinated attack," according to the Atlanta Police Department.

(13,386 posts)If go along to get along fails and the law is undermined by powerful corporate and fascist powers we might have to use direct action. Learn from this site you may need it in the future. With the fascism of republicans continues,to pretending like everything is still fine or thinking someone more powerful than you or someone else will fix it or if we believe democracy cant be overturned with the dire threats that keep on coming in effect some people afraid of doing what is nessessary or even entertaining the idea of resistance when protests fail might become like good germans and that scares me very much..

Im sure the cops could find some (already fucked up) city land on which to build their amusement park.

(9,423 posts)Basically an already fucked up old site with broken down buildings and foundations. Its also away from people, the kind of place one would learn to shoot, start and put out fires, learn to detonate explosives. Its kind of best to do that away from people.

(13,386 posts)Refused to hear why the resistance was there. Why they wanted the forest preserved.. because they wanted cop city so fuck you.
Its about resisting corporate power and expansion over ruling the will of people and destruction of the enviroment in case you didnt get that and its also resisting fascism. And resisting cops further being treated as a military force. Police brutality increases when cops look.at cities as if they are war zones.

I can't agree - but I'll give you points for being consistent - and clear about where you stand.

(13,386 posts)Is being made to train cops in urban warfare. Cops arent the military and rethugs have infiltrated police and want to make cops become thier own police force ultimately . The republicans are full on fascist pigs and I dont want magat racist cops trained in urban warfare. Who would they be fighting against with thier warfare training, whom, maybe black people, gbltqi ,citizens or the "woke" left in the cities defending people's human rights that these fascist want to make into a police state .
I stand with the protesters on this one.
Fuck cop city and all who support using urban warfare in American cities against American citizens.
May cop city be burned to the ground.

(9,423 posts)From the article. Along with classrooms and administrative buildings, the training center would include a shooting range, a driving course to practice chases and a burn building for firefighters to work on putting out fires. A mock village featuring a fake home, convenience store and nightclub would also be built for rehearsing raids.
Lets think for a minute.
Buffalo shooting in a store
Orlando shooting in a nightclub
Classrooms shootings in schools.
Administrative buildings, workplace shootings
A house, the most dangerous place a cop shows up. Domestic violence costs many cops their lives.
A burn building for the fire department
Its a training center. Is it better to have trained or untrained cops. In my book, trained.

(30,249 posts)there are existing buildings that could be retrofitted for all these purposes. Think dead malls across America. No reason for more deforestation. Second of all, its not so much that theyll be getting training, its the quality and content of the training. Arguing in favor of the complex for better trained cops is like arguing for universal literacy and giving out copies of Mein Kampf because literacy is inherently good.

(9,423 posts)They are taking the site of an old prison in work farm and making it a public safety training facility. They are building what police officers and fire fighters say they need to train in. The city is using land it already owns to keep some of the cost to taxpayers down. Building a public safety training center is more like building a library because now the cops have Mein Kamph and you want to be able to expose them to greater works

The other side of the story is
Defend the Atlanta Forest, a social media site used by members of the movement, said Monday on Twitter that those arrested were not violent agitators but peaceful concert-goers who were nowhere near the demonstration. A representative of a public-relations firm involved in the groups events said that it could not immediately comment.
.
So the police Sept into the forest and rounded up anyone hey found
including tourists?

(15,636 posts)with other descriptions and reporting. So - we're now claiming that the police went back to the concert (nowhere near the demonstration) and started arresting innocent bystanders? Guess we'll see ....

(9,423 posts)It was local and state law enforcement who saved democracy on 1/6. Who came to defend the Capitol, metropolitan police, Alexandria police, Fairfax police, prince William police, Prince Georges police, Montgomery police, Maryland and Virginia state police. Democracy was saved by state and local police departments. Maybe burning their training facilities to the ground while attacking them is not the best idea.
