DeSantis seeks $98 million to fund Florida's own military

Source: clickorlando.com

Florida State Guard could be active by July 1

Updated: March 9, 2023 at 5:27 PM

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – As lawmakers in Tallahassee consider Gov. Ron DeSantis’ budget proposal this session, they will be also be deciding whether to approve a steep funding increase establishing Florida’s own branch of the military.

.....................

“The Florida State Guard will be comprised of Floridians, and it will be assigned to assist and help only Floridians,” DeSantis said in a news conference last June. “It will not be subject to be mobilized by the federal government, and the federal government cannot impose policies or penalties on the Florida State Guard.”

DeSantis claimed the Florida National Guard, which is governed by the federal government and was credited for helping rescue people after hurricanes Ian and Nicole last year, was not providing enough resources to the state......................................

Fri Mar 10, 2023, 02:44 PM

That problem is what they do there - launching rockets into equatorial orbit. The place they do this from needs a couple of things - it must be as close to the equator as possible, it must be on the US mainland so things like propellant and astronauts can be driven there, and it must be on the East Coast so if a rocket decides to stop working before it reaches orbit it lands on a school of lionfish rather than someone’s house. The only place that gives you all three is Florida.

To be sure, DeSantis' "army" will have very little to do with the aid, safety and security of Floridians during times of weather crises. The generals and other "capos" are already in place. The $98 million is to pay the bar bill for the highly "motivated", military rejected, bully-boys who will charade as street patrols, fully armed with everything but intelligence or souls.

The whole purpose of this is to throw fear into the non-white population. It is the heart of Jim Crow come back beating strong. Non-Floridians, do not find yourselves too smug. The way has been made clear for similar outrage in many American locales for similar misuse/abuse of power. If DeSantis succeeds, it will become fashionable in places some people don't expect. Columbus, Oh., Springfield, Mo., Grand Junction, Colo., just about anywhere people have been foolish enough to elect their government from the host of lying bigots who are the current GOP.

this can ONLY be a good thing.. sure it's a danger to anyone crossing into Florida from the sea & of course there will be civil violations galore.. but otherwise the state borders GEORGIA(where Brian Kemp will no doubt one up DeSantis by making that forest police SUPERBASE even more of a redoubt) & ALABAMA(where Kay Ivey might try to join the p***ing contest while in progress!). As long as Florida's legislature are willing to spend FLORIDA'S SALES TAXES on DeSantis's brown shirts the rest of us should NOT be worried by it. The solid south is already a thing and they can hire "modern re-enactors" till they are blue in the face. There's NO CHANCE that this force will do enough during a big storm to render FEMA or the National Guard obsolete.

$98M would maybe pay for about 2,000 people (assuming base salary of $50k/yr) for 1 year. That's not including equipment and health care. This would be at best a "supplementary" force and given that salary, probably not a very good one; maybe fit to parade around on TV.

So when the next big hurricane hits FL, do other states not send their NG to help out? FEMA? Or do power companies keep their crews home instead of allowing them to go to affected areas and get the power back on? Rugged individualism seems to be a keyword for I don't give a sh-t about anybody else but me.

Michigan is one.

"The MIDF uniform differs slightly from the Army uniform; MIDF soldiers wear the state flag on their right shoulder instead of the American flag.[4]

The MIDF is tasked with emergency management missions such as handling the reception, storage and stationing of the Strategic National Stockpile in Michigan, and supplying trained and uniformed Community Emergency Response Teams.[2]

MIDF missions have included working alongside the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs in processing benefit applications for military veterans,[5] and providing disaster response aid, including tree and debris removal, following tornado activity.[6]

(2022) On its current website, the Michigan Defense Force mission is stated: TO PROVIDE READY AND ABLE MILITARY FORCES TO ASSIST STATE AND LOCAL AUTHORITIES IN TIMES OF STATE EMERGENCIES AND TO AUGMENT THE MICHIGAN ARMY NATIONAL GUARD AND MICHIGAN AIR NATIONAL GUARD AS REQUIRED.[7]"

The Florida State Guard (FSG) is the state defense force of the U.S. state of Florida. The FSG was created in 1941 to serve as a stateside replacement for the Florida National Guard while the National Guard was deployed abroad during World War II. The FSG is available to the governor of Florida whenever needed, but unlike the National Guard, the FSG is trained and funded by the state and therefore can not be federalized.[3] The FSG was reactivated in 2022 after the Florida legislature appropriated US$10 million in funding.

State defense forces are authorized by the federal government under Title 32, Section 109 of the United States Code.[4]
Twenty-three states, as well as the territory of Puerto Rico, actively maintain these forces.
