Polish Ambassador to France: Poland will be forced to enter war if Ukraine fails to defend itself
Source: Ukrainska Pravda
Quote from Rościszewski: "It is not NATO, Poland or Slovakia that are mounting ever more pressure, but Russia, which has invaded Ukraine. Russia, which is seizing its territories. Russia, which is killing its people. And Russia, which is abducting Ukrainian children.
Therefore, either Ukraine will defend its independence today, or we will have to enter this conflict. Because our main values, which were the basis of our civilization and our culture will be threatened. Therefore, we will have no choice but to enter the conflict."
Details: Following the ambassadors remark, Polands Embassy in France issued a statement saying that it has been interpreted by some media "out of context".

(6,082 posts)The whole of Europe will be in danger if Ukraine fails. Then we will see what France and Germany will do. Those of us old folks can remember what happened before.

Now that Putin is an internationally wanted war criminal with little or nothing to lose ...what's the Plan C?

(13,036 posts)The 'one for all, all for one' Article 5 will be activated. That MAY be the best outcome of poland joining the war. With ukr right at its borders & with millions of ukr refugees taking shelter within its boundaries i dont see how ploand can escape the conflict.

(13,036 posts)Or rather a preemptive move. Given russian aggression i dont doubt nato wld need to come to poland's defense.

(111,243 posts)but I know the Poles are sick of being afraid of the bear in the woods. So far, they're lining the borders with Russia and Belarussia with metal and concrete hedgehog antitank traps. Shooting is a bit premature, they've been on a military spending spree but they've got the same need for training on S. Korean systems that Ukraine had on US, UK, German, and French systems.
This why so much of the world reacted so strongly against Russia's invasion of Ukraine: European land wars have a nasty habit of expanding into world wars.

(9,136 posts)There are plans to do this by 2030, but the continuing resistance from Ukraine may make him move faster on that.
The Polish are right to be wary, but I doubt they would be his first NATO target.
It's more likely he'd try to cut a corridor through Lithuania to try to prevent Kaliningrad from being cut off in the event of a wider war.

(1,523 posts)I read an article a couple of days ago reporting that Polish security services had broken up a plot by Russians in Poland to blow up rail facilities that were being used to ship military supplies to Ukraine.
In WW II:
-- Poles provided the Brits with one or more German ENIGMA machines, thereby greatly aiding in the breaking of German military codes.
-- Polish troops went ashore on D-Day.
-- Polish troops fought from Normandy all the way into Germany.
Not a good idea to mess with the Poles.
