House GOP chairmen ask Manhattan D.A. Alvin Bragg to testify on Trump probe
Source: NBC News
Three House Republican committee chairmen sent Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg a letter Monday requesting he testify before Congress "about what plainly appears to be a politically motivated prosecutorial decision" in any potential indictment of former President Donald Trump in the prosecutor's hush-money probe.
"You are reportedly about to engage in an unprecedented abuse of prosecutorial authority: the indictment of a former president of the United States and current declared candidate for that office," the letter said.
It comes ahead of a pending New York grand jury decision in the case.
"This indictment comes after years of your office searching for a basis any basis on which to bring charges, ultimately settling on a novel legal theory untested anywhere in the country and one that federal authorities declined to pursue," they lawmakers continued. "If these reports are accurate, your actions will erode confidence in the evenhanded application of justice and unalterably interfere in the course of the 2024 presidential election."

(2,611 posts)Solicitors' letter to Private Eye:
We act for Mr Arkell who is Retail Credit Manager of Granada TV Rental Ltd.
His attention has been drawn to an article appearing in the issue of Private Eye dated 9th April 1971 on page 4. The statements made about Mr Arkell are entirely untrue and clearly highly defamatory.
We are therefore instructed to require from you immediately your proposals for dealing with the matter. Mr Arkell's first concern is that there should be a full retraction at the earliest possible date in Private Eye and he will also want his costs paid. His attitude to damages will be governed by the nature of your reply.
The reply:
We acknowledge your letter of 29th April referring to Mr J. Arkell.
We note that Mr Arkell's attitude to damages will be governed by the nature of our reply and would therefore be grateful if you would inform us what his attitude to damages would be, were he to learn that the nature of our reply is as follows: fuck off.
The legal process continued for more than a year before the case fell apart and Private Eye was awarded costs.
The Eye wrote: "In view of the above, Mr Arkell has now, albeit belatedly, complied with the suggestion made to him at an earlier stage in the proceedings."

(12,991 posts)Of Mueller She Wrote, said this AM on Stephanie Miller, that congress has ZERO jurisdiction over a state AG in an ongoing investigation, and this is outright Obstruction of Justice. Gym, McCarthy et al should be charged with such, ASAP. I am sick of this God damned weaponized congress of fools just shitting all over the independent judicial branch of government. Equal in power ti congress. Or it is suppose to be when criminals are not assigned into leadership roles to protect their own.

(33,643 posts)If Allison Gill was suggesting it *legally* constitutes OoJ, I'd be pretty disappointed in her.
There's no statute that could be used to prosecute this action as obstruction of justice in the legal sense. Are they trying to obstruct justice, yes, probably, in the common vernacular, so if that's what she was getting at, okay.
But a lot more has to happen than a nasty letter asking him to appear before a congressional committee before any prosecutor would even think of touching this in terms of a 'case' for obstruction.
Now, they start making actual threats, issuing subpoenas, that could change the equation at least a little.

(25,333 posts)After the case is closed, whatever the outcome, is the time for a public review.
The details of the case should be confidential. The Republicans want a) to get the information of what evidence the prosecutor is holding so they can publicly attack it in advance, b) to discredit the investigation with personal attacks and whataboutism, and c) to speechify for the TV cameras for political posturing and fund-raising.
Bragg should ask the Committee what the legislative purpose of the hearing is. That is the excuse the Republicans use when they refuse a Congressional subpoena. Congress has no oversight authority over a city DA.

(26,245 posts)Bragg stop his efforts when clearly, a grand jury has found enough evidence to warrant djt's arrest and charges.
It's been way too long that any court actions in the arrest of djt to face his first of many upcoming charges have been presented.
It stinks to high heaven that the sheep of the GOP follows the orange tangerine over the edge of the cliff, falling to their death, despite everything being legal and proper. Why not let the justice system proceed and tRUMP defend himself properly like all defendants do? What's the problem, GOP?
